SUMMARY:SENSE - Assessment and Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Sensory Rehabilitation following Stroke: Neuroscience Foundations\, \nNew Evidence and Application to Clinical Practice. \nPresented by Professor Leeanne Carey –  BAppSc (OT)\, PhD\, FAOTA\, FOTARA. \nLeeanne Carey is Professor of Occupational Therapy in the School of Allied Health\, Human Services and Sport\, La Trobe University and Founding Head of the Neurorehabilitation and Recovery research group\, Stroke Division\, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in Melbourne\, Australia. Professor Carey’s research program focuses on stroke rehabilitation and recovery: in particular how the brain adapts and how we might harness that potential in rehabilitation. She has developed a successful\, neuroscience-based approach to help stroke survivors regain a sense of touch so that they can use their hands more effectively in daily activities. She uses tools such as MRI to investigate changes in the brain and how this knowledge may be used to better understand recovery and target rehabilitation. Research includes the impact of depression and cognition on stroke recovery. An important focus has been to translate these discoveries into clinical practice and better outcomes for stroke survivors  \nThe aim of the workshop is to guide you in acquiring the knowledge\, skills and clinical reasoning required to deliver evidence-based sensory rehabilitation to persons who have impaired body sensations after a stroke. \nA particular focus will be to introduce you to new evidence-based assessments and SENSe Therapy. \n Overall Learning Objectives: \nFollowing this workshop you should be able to: \n–describe the nature of sensory loss following stroke \n–appreciate the impact of sensory loss following stroke \n–critically evaluate current sensory assessment methods and be aware of new standardized assessments \n-critically evaluate methods of treating sensory loss relative to current principles of neuroscience. \n–explain the rationale and neuroscience foundations for SENSe Therapy \n-articulate the principles underlying SENSe Therapy \n-apply newly researched sensory retraining methods to a range of sensory stimuli and tasks. \n-apply evidence-based principles of sensory retraining in the context of functional\, client-centred activities. \n-plan a SENSe Therapy treatment program for a client \n-adopt an evidence-based approach to assessment and rehabilitation of sensory loss following stroke \n  \nThe workshop will include practical sessions relating to: \nAssessment using new standardised assessments\, \nAssessment of sensation\, in context of occupational tasks \nApplication of SENSe training approach – component training \n-texture discrimination \n-limb position sense. \n-tactile object recognition. \nApplication of principles of training in context of everyday tasks. \nMaterials provided \nWorkshop manual that includes presentation slides\, practical workshop sheets\, case scenarios and training resources. \nTarget audience \nOccupational therapists and physiotherapists – with particular interest in stroke rehabilitation. \n\n\n\nSENSE –  Assessment and Treatment\n\n\nDate\nSaturday May 8th and Sunday May 9th\, 2021 \n08:00 – 16:00\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost \n  \n  \n \nEarly bird before 8/3/21 \nMember $400.00 \nRural/remote member $300.00 \nNon-members $790.00 \nStandard rate after 8/3/21 \nMember $500.00 \nRural/remote member $375.00 \nNon-members $790.00\n\n\n\nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below. SUMMARY:Basic Neurological Assessment 2021
DESCRIPTION:About the Course \nAlthough this course is centered on Basic Neurological Assessment and therefore aims to provide it’s attendees with a greater depth of understanding of why and how specific assessment components are undertaken as part of the role of Occupational Therapists working with individuals with a neurological condition; it also aims to provide a practical understanding of what the assessment results represent and how they will link to Occupational Therapy intervention. \nThe course will cover: \n– The basis of why Neurological Assessment is important in Occupational Therapy practice \n– What components make up a thorough Occupational Therapy Initial Neurological Assessment \n– How to implement an Initial Neurological Assessment including practical application of techniques \n– The analysis of assessment findings\, as they relate to Occupational Therapy practice \n– How to link assessment findings to intervention \nOn completion of the course\, attendees will be armed with the practical knowledge of how to complete a Basic Neurological Assessment and how to connect it to Occupational Therapy practice. \nThe course will include opportunities for observation and practice of assessment techniques and learning through a range of mediums including audio-visual\, group discussion and in-vivo practice. \nThe course is aimed at Occupational Therapists who have either limited experience in Neurological Assessment or would like to develop greater confidence in this area. \n About the Presenter \nSince graduating from Curtin University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy\, Carlo Divita developed his skills in Neurological Assessment working at Royal Perth Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital in the areas of acute neurosurgery and neurology\, stroke rehabilitation and acquired brain injury rehabilitation. Most notably across his career he has spent six years as a Senior Occupational Therapist on the State Acquired Brain Injury Rehabilitation Services unit\, helping to influence its development in to one of the most well-regarded specialist brain injury units in Australia. \nHe has completed a Master of Clinical Rehabilitation in Neurological Occupational Therapy\, from Flinders University in 2015 and has been recognized for his level of expertise in this area\, publishing a research paper and presenting at multiple state and national conferences. \nAs well as presenting numerous papers at conferences\, including a Keynote address\, Carlo has also provided frequent in-house education at both a basic and advanced level and run workshops both for fellow clinicians\, as well as for students as part of their academic curriculum. \nIn July of 2019\, Carlo established The Rehabilitation Collective to bring his passion for brain injury rehabilitation into the community setting\, providing occupation focused assessment and intervention to individuals at all stages of their journey. \n\n\n\nBasic Neurological Assessment\n\n\nDate\nFriday May 28th 2021 \n09:00 – 16:30\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost \n  \n  \n \nEarly bird before 28/4/21 \nMember $200.00 \nRural/remote member $150.00 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStudent $100.00 \nStandard rate after 28/4/21 \nMember $250.00 \nRural/remote member $187.50 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStudent $120.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\nBook Online\nIf you prefer booking offline\, you can use the registration form below. \n**PD Registration Form 2021 \nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below.
