DESCRIPTION:After the recent success of both the basic and complex course Sandi Lightfoot from the University of Sydney has confirmed to return to Perth and repeat these courses in February 2020. \nSandi Lightfoot is an OT and service manager for a home visiting modification service covering the local government areas of South West Sydney. She has worked for the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney since 1987. Her area of expertise includes environmental modifications\, occupational performance and outcome measures for ensuing that clients’ reach their maximum potential. She is currently involved with the honors panel for OT Australia\, has developed publications with NSW Health for safe design and aged care facilities\, and has participated in numerous working parties and panels related to service development for HACC Home Modifications Services\, Universal and Adaptable Design. DESCRIPTION:Neurology and Anatomy of the Upper Limb (lets get hands on !) – Associate Professor Anthony Pohl – Friday November 30th \nWe are very excited to have Associate Professor Anthony Pohl give a repeat course on Neurology and Anatomy of the Upper Limb in November 2019. \nMr. A. P. Pohl is the Director\, Orthopaedic Trauma\, at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma\, University of Adelaide. \nHe has a major interest in pelvic and acetabular fractures\, external fixation and fracture healing and is actively involved in teaching\, instrument design and technology. \nWhat is unique about his courses is that he teaches with a “hands on” approach \nWhat will you learn at the course ? \nNeurology and Anatomy\, but in a “hands on” fashion\, with illustrations of how to examine various nerves or muscle function\, and then undertaking that on “buddies”. Several “tricks” of the trade-in examination technique\, and often several techniques of examining a specific muscle\, or nerve (by examining that muscle) are also covered. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Associate Professor Birgitta Rosèn ( from Sweden ). \nIt is with great excitement that the WA OT Association presents two day workshops by Birgitta Rosen\, an international leader in the field of neuroplasticity and rehabilitation for OT Week 2019. \nBirgitta is an Associate Professor and an experienced occupational therapist. With over 40 years’ experience\, Birgitta has a special interest in nerve injuries and their associated rehabilitation – sensory re-learning using guided plasticity or extrinsic modulation of brain plasticity mechanisms\, and sensory feedback in hand prostheses. She is very widely published\, with 83 original scientific articles and 6 book chapters in the field. Birgitta currently holds a position at Lund University\, Germany\, with a combination of clinical work at the Department of Hand Surgery\, Malmö and lecturing and research at the Department of Health Sciences Lund University\, a position she has held since 2009. She has been an invited speaker to the Philadelphia Hand Meeting twice\, as well as the Australian Hand Therapy Association National Conference in 2004\, and was awarded The Inaugural Cristina Alegri Award\, IFSHT Congress\, Buenos Aires 2016 for her contribution to the understanding of the hand and sensibility. \nAcross the two days Birgitta will present masterclasses of ‘Hand and Brain – an evidence-based rehabilitation approach to peripheral nerve conditions and how to use guided plasticity’. SUMMARY:Introduction to the HDS-R Dementia Course
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is aimed at health professionals who care for people living with dementia\, and contains a very brief introduction about dementia before centering on the HDS-R\, what it is\, how to use it and how to turn the outcomes into a meaningful care plan for someone with dementia. It is highly interactive and the participants will leave with copies of the PowerPoint and the Possibility Oriented Approach manual\, plus some other resources. \nWorkshop objectives are: \n\nUnderstand the underpinning theory of the HDS-R\nDemonstrate ability to assess people with dementia using the HDS-R\nCombine the results of HDS-R assessments with a Possibility Oriented Approach to provide person-centered interventions.\n\nJackie Reynolds who is presenting this course\, is an OT with over 17 years clinical experience. She has previously spent 5 years working for a major Victorian hospital\, however much of her experience has been in aged care\, with 11 years in the field. As well as earning a Cert IV in Dementia practice: Jackie earned her Cert IV in Training and Assessment\, and has provided workshops throughout the state for Baptistcare\, on risk enablement and the Montessori approach. She also previously worked at Bendigo TAFE\, delivering the Cert III Therapy Assistant course. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lisa Scott \nWe are delighted to have secured Lisa Scott from Melbourne to present this exciting course. Lisa is an experienced Occupational Therapists with over 25 years experience. \nThe areas covered in this workshop are :- Theoretical Models\, Assessment\, Hand Development\,Pre-writing and drawing skills\,Intervention Strategies andSpecific Programs. \nThis 2-day workshop investigates elements of handwriting\, drawing and tool usage for kindergarten and primary school children. Handwriting difficulties are one of the primary reasons for a referral to an occupational therapist. Handwriting is also one of the most complex tasks in which children engage. It requires skills in the areas of cognition\, visuo-spatial\, language fine motor and kinaesthetic development. Research has indicated that children who can write well perform at a higher level academically. DESCRIPTION:After the recent success of both the basic and complex course Sandi Lightfoot from the University of Sydney has confirmed to return to Perth and repeat these courses in February 2019. \nSandi is an OT of 35 years’ experience\, during this time she has presented extensively \, both at universities\, conferences and nationally on environmental modifications. Until recently she was the Senior OT with Home Modifications Australia. She has over 18 years’ experience running a Home modifications service. \nShe has worked for the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney since 1987. Her area of expertise includes environmental modifications\, occupational performance and outcome measures for ensuing that clients’ reach their maximum potential. She is currently involved with the honors panel for OT Australia\, has developed publications with NSW Health for safe design and aged care facilities\, and has participated in numerous working parties and panels related to service development for HACC Home Modifications Services\, Universal and Adaptable Design. She is also a foundation member and the NSW Health representative on the Home Modification Clearing House based at the University of NSW. \nCurrently she is also a subject matter expert with the NDIA\, Central Technical Advice Team\, reviewing and providing advice on complex modifications nationally and sits on 2 committees with respect to NDIA responsibilities. \nThe one day complex course will include complex bathrooms for conceptual designs\, major ramps and lift considerations and kitchen design.
