Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. The methodology focuses on questions that raise awareness (what is happening around the client or patient; raise self-awareness (what they are experiencing personally) and to raise responsibility (take responsibility for their actions and increasing ownership and accountability). \nPractical content \nPractical coaching principles and processes are demonstrated\, elaborated and practiced within the workshop. The workshop involves two full practice sessions of combining the coaching principles\, coaching process (the GROW model) and the listening and speaking skills of the coaching approach. \nMaterial Provided \nA full set of support notes are provided for each participant that covers the principles\, processes and the listening and speaking of the coaching approach. \nTarget Audience \nThe coaching approach can be applied to any\, and all\, human interaction. This experience started in the field of Youth Work where he was instrumental in developing strategic training and development for Youth Workers and young people and then\, in the mid 1980’s\, he moved into the management and development consultancy field within organisations. His consultancy has three interrelated arms or services: Leadership development\, Coaching and Facilitation services and a Training arm. \nOver the 37 years Graham has built up a formidable client base that includes small to large business enterprises\, government organisations and ‘not for profit’ groups covering such sectors as health\, human services\, education and training\, oil and gas\, mining\, finance\, and manufacturing. Over the past 26 years there has been a clear bent toward leadership development and the powerful process of coaching. Today\, within the scope of the ‘three arms of the consultancy’ up to three quarters of Graham’s professional time is focussed on Executive Coaching (coaching leaders and managers) within a wide range of organisations. \nGraham was first introduced to a ‘formal’ coaching structure in 1994 while working overseas. The coaching model provided a powerful structure and a use of linguistic tools that clearly assisted clients (and himself!) in developing the inner person and producing possibilities and options that did not seem visible outside of coaching. This in turn led to a pursuit of coaching models and methodology that peaked in the completion of a Graduate Diploma in Professional Coaching from the Newfield Institute (Australia) in 2001 that focused on ontological coaching models and frameworks. \nIn the past 20 years Graham has coached around 480 people for a total in excess of 500 coaching hours. He is usually coaching between 35 – 45 clients at any given time. His coaching tends to move in and out of what he likes to call ‘Outer Work’ and ‘Inner Work’. Outer Work being coaching for performance – to do with setting and achieving goals and choosing and executing actions. Inner Work relates to coaching for ‘being’ and is to do with beliefs\, values\, purpose\, and confidence. \nOver the past 8 years Graham has designed and facilitated a program titled ‘Taking the coaching approach’. This program has been used extensively in Saint John of God Health Care hospitals and facilities across Australia to develop health care workers to develop a coaching approach. DESCRIPTION:Dr Kristie Harper is an occupational therapist with over twenty years clinical experience working with adults in community and hospital settings. For the last decade\, Kristie has worked at an acute tertiary hospital\, integrating research into clinical practice. She is currently works as a Research Coordinator between Curtin University and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. For the past five years Kristie has been a member of a local Human Research Ethics Committee. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners.  \nThis workshop aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational therapy in chronic pain rehabilitation. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. DESCRIPTION:Friday 1st April 2022 \nPresented by : James Tannenbaum \nThis workshop is designed for therapists wanting to understand more about applying mental health skills to therapy. It is both a didactic and experiential workshop designed to give participants an overview of a range of skills based on current cognitive behaviour therapies and mindfulness. The workshop includes specific Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) concepts that may be practiced immediately and implemented with a wide range of clients. \nDBT is a transdiagnostic therapy with a strong behavioural focus. It has some favourable approaches including a specific orientation around increasing skillful behaviour whilst reducing unhelpful behaviour to achieve goals. It also has a structure which assists therapist to learn and implement the principles with fidelity. \nDBT is also integrative and aligns well with occupational therapy practice. \nTopics to be covered include: \n\nMindfulness\nCoping skills\nEmotion regulation\n\nParticipants can expect to undertake mindfulness and awareness practices as well as self-reflection exercises that may in turn be applied with clients. Participants will receive a comprehensive slide pack with supplementary information as well as references for further exploration. \nAbout the Presenter  \nJames Tannenbaum is an Occupational Therapist with extensive mental health experience\, currently with an inpatient focus. James is currently a senior occupational therapist providing group based Dialectical Behaviour Therapy at Perth Clinic\, which is a 100-bed private psychiatric hospital where he has been since 2016. \nPrior experience includes mental health trainer at Richmond Wellbeing\, training staff and community workers in recovery oriented practice as well as trauma-informed care. It is used with clients of any age\, gender\, diagnosis\, or cultural background whose performance is compromised by difficulties with the cognitive demands of occupations. \nThe assessment yields information about performance mastery and cognitive strategy application behaviours. Strategy application behaviours assessed align with dimensions of attention and perception (P)\, learning\, memory and recall (R)\, planning\, decision-making and judgment (P)\, and the capacity to act on decisions and follow-through with plans (P). \nFindings from the PRPP Assessment are then used to plan PRPP intervention where the focus is on developing strategy application behaviours required by everyday tasks and to improve task performance mastery. The PRPP assessment is used internationally and has been translated into several languages. DESCRIPTION:Self-regulation is a skill everyone needs to thrive across all ages. It is a common occupational therapy goal for occupational therapists working with children and families\, and also one which has very varied research. It is considered to be an essential skill for development\, and something that can impact every area of our life\, at every point. Yet there are such different views of what it actually is\, and how to develop self-regulation. \nThis workshop comes from a lens supporting children\, families and adults around children to learn self-regulation\, however the concepts and models are applicable across ages. Here are some of the topics that we will cover in this workshop: \n\nWhat is self-regulation? Looking into the differing definitions and perceptions of self-regulation in practice\, and society. Self-regulation can be an ambiguous topic so we will go through some of the fields of thought\, and the evidence behind these\, to delve into what self-regulation actually is.\nAn overview of self-regulation frameworks and tools\, and the evidence behind these.\nDeveloping self-regulation: assessment and intervention approaches for practice.\n\nAbout the Presenter :- \nEmily Burns has worked at Calm and Connected since graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy).  Calm and Connected is a private\, community-based practice\, working with children\, families and schools\, including delivering positive behaviour support services. DESCRIPTION:About the course: \nThe ‘Taking a coaching approach’ workshop offers an additional developmental tool for those who work directly with people. It is built on a style of communication and motivation aimed at unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. The methodology focuses on questions that raise awareness (what is happening around the client or patient; raise self-awareness (what they are experiencing personally) and to raise responsibility (take responsibility for their actions and increasing ownership and accountability). \nPractical coaching principles and processes are demonstrated\, elaborated and practiced within the workshop. The workshop involves two full practice sessions of combining the coaching principles\, coaching process (the GROW model) and the listening and speaking skills of the coaching approach. \nA full set of support notes are provided for each participant that covers the principles\, processes and the listening and speaking of the coaching approach. \nTarget Audience \nThe coaching approach can be applied to any\, and all\, human interaction. The content will be relevant for those who treat older adults who are approaching the middle to later stages of dementia and end of life. This workshop is also suitable for Occupational Therapy Students who are considering a career with older adults. \nThere will be a mixture of lecture style content\, interactive discussion\, and practical activities. \nThe aims of the course are for participants to: \n\nUnderstand how sensory stimulation can be used with older adults\nIncrease knowledge and confidence in how to assess and treat people in the later stages of dementia\nRecognise the important role that the occupational therapist can play in facilitating quality of life and wellbeing with this client group\n\nContent will include: \n\nRevision of dementia including the different types\, signs\, symptoms\, stages and strengths\nAn overview of sensory stimulation and the benefits to the older population\nExploration into different ways to assess sensory preferences to ensure appropriate sensory activities can be prescribed\nHands on participation in a range of sensory stimulation intervention ideas\nAn opportunity to apply lessons learned to own workplaces by considering the role of the Occupational Therapist\, and barriers and enablers to implementation\n\nParticipants will receive copies of the workshop slides as well as practical resources to support practice. \nAbout the Presenter.\nSince graduating from a double degree of Occupational Therapy and Business Administration from Curtin University\, Elizabeth Oliver has worked in both community and residential care settings for large not-for-profit aged care providers for the past 15 years. During her aged care career\, Elizabeth has lead a range of culture change and care innovation research projects\, and has gained extensive experience in implementing the Montessori Approach as a method of fostering person centred care. \nElizabeth strives to increase the recognition of the value of allied health services to this client group and to improve access to therapeutic interventions that can enhance the functional abilities\, participation\, quality of life and wellbeing of older adults\, particularly those living with dementia. Elizabeth is also committed to inspiring people to consider working in the aged care industry. She has tutored in the Gerontology Unit at Curtin University for numerous years\, as well as working in Interprofessional Coordinator and Clinical Educator Coordinator roles. \nIn recent years\, Elizabeth has formed her own private practice\, Memory Box Collective\, with an aim to bring joy into the lives of older adults\, through consultancy\, training\, research\, resources and special projects. She has worked as an occupational therapist for over 40 years in Perth\, NT and the UK\, in hospital\, rehabilitation and community settings\, with people of all ages who have developmental\, neurological\, and musculo-skeletal conditions. \nOver the past 15+ years\, she has become focused on sleep: learning about the huge challenge this can be for so many people with disabilities and health conditions; learning about the massive impact this has on their  health\, wellbeing and participation\, and that of their families; and learning about the complex and diverse factors that are so important to sleep. \nThis learning is most importantly through her contact with the 100’s of clients and families who have described their unique sleep difficulties and the effects on their everyday lives. It has been enhanced by collaboration with colleagues across Perth\, Australia and internationally. Key aspects of her learning have been i) a Churchill Fellowship (2007) which allowed her to travel to  the UK and Canada to attend specialist sleep training courses and to spend time with expert sleep clinicians and researchers\, ii) completion of PhD studies (2019) which allowed her  to learn about research\, and about sleep and biological rhythms\, iii) membership of and participation in national and international sleep research groups and iv) continued research collaboration with sleep and disability researchers across Australia and internationally. \nSue has provided sleep training across the occupational therapy and allied health sector for many years. She has been an invited presenter of sleep training to clinicians in Singapore\, Canada\, New Zealand and across Australia. She contributes sleep information to the Assistive Technology unit for occupational therapy students at Edith Cowan University. She provides targeted sleep information to clinicians working with specific populations such as autism\, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. \nSue is particularly passionate about the importance of sleep within the context of circadian health – our 24 hour rhythms which are so fundamental to all aspects of mental and physical health\, and all aspects of function and participation. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ian Cheok.\nChronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for patients\, healthcare professionals and the global healthcare system. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners. \nThis workshop aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational therapy in chronic pain rehabilitation. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. Topics to be covered include: \nPain Science Made Simple Learn about the basic neuroscience of pain\, and the interrelationship between physiological\, psychological\, environmental and occupational processes in pain perception. \nPain Assessment in Occupational Therapy Practice Gain an overview of how to assess patients with pain (acute and chronic)\, and using assessment findings guide diagnostic\, rehabilitation and occupation-related care plans. \nInterventions for Common Clinical Pain Syndromes Explore the different approaches to treat chronic pain\, current available evidence on their efficacy and relevance in various occupational therapy settings. Discover how occupational therapists can implement effective interventions through therapeutic neuroscience education\, psychological approaches\, functional rehabilitation\, soft tissue therapy and assistive technology. \nThis workshop will be delivered in a casual manner with inspiring recovery stories and short gentle yoga breaks (to make your experience as pain free as possible). SUMMARY:Wheelchair Prescription and Seating 2023
DESCRIPTION:Friday May 19th\, 2023 \nAbout the course :- \nThis full day workshop will be broken down as follows :- \nIntroduction to seating assessment.  An overview of the process and tools of a seating and mobility assessment. What other assessments can be used to support the functional justifications of the recommended solution…..what kind of information do we need to be collecting and why? (Theory and discussion-  A Seating Ax form and powerpoint notes will be provided) \nReview of pelvis and posture. In order to work through and understand the postural requirements of our end users\, we need to be able to identify the position and capacity of pelvis positioning. This section of the day will review the bony landmarks of the pelvis and identification of and articulation of seated posture.  An introduction to seating principles will be included.(Whilst this is a theoretical component we will be doing lots of moving and locating of bony landmarks) \nMAT. Mechanical Assessment Tool or as is commonly referred to as MAT provides objective information to guide the capacity of positioning. Anyone who is reliant on a wheelchair for all essential mobility or who is sitting for prolonged periods should potentially undergo a MAT evaluation. This assessment can be overwhelming for therapists new to seating prescription or only doing the occasional seating assessment. This practical component will break down the essentials of the MAT portion of the seating assessment. Attendees will be guided through the pelvis positions and supine portion of the MAT. The aim is to provide clinicians with the tools and confidence to start to complete these assessments. Attendees are encouraged to wear loose comfortable clothing as they will be performing Supine Range of Motion (ROM) assessments and measurements.  The focus will be on pelvis\, hip and knee ranges in relation to a seated position. \nBringing it all together. Seating principles\, clinical reasoning and identification of points of control to guide the potential trial parameters. \nWe will discuss how the information from the MAT guides the positioning requirements before practising with case examples to simulate potential support requirements. \nAbout the presenter :- \nTracee-lee joined Permobil as a Clinical Education Specialist in July 2019.  After gaining a BHSc (Occupational Therapy) in New Zealand\, Tracee-lee initially worked in Vocational Rehabilitation where she was able to develop her task analysis and biomechanical and report writing skills. Tracee-lee had developed a keen interest in mobility while working in a USA camp and respite program and seeing how AT could assist in breaking down barriers and contribute to increased functional capacity. When a position came up at Seating to Go as a wheelchair and seating assessor she joined the team. Tracee-lee spent the next 6 years working there and contributes her assessment and prescription skills too New Zealands top mentorship. Tracee-lee’s first experience in facilitating training was running level one powerchair training under the competency mobility pathway for assessors.\nTracee-lee left NZ 10 years ago to take on the Seating Senior clinical role for custom moulded seating at Northcott (Sydney NSW).  In her time in Australia she has worked  within the seating and mobility areas at multiple levels\, assessment\, educator\, supplier and manufacturer.
