DESCRIPTION:TAKING THE COACHING APPROACH \nGRAHAM TAYLOR \nFRIDAY JULY 21st \n About the course. \nThe ‘Taking a coaching approach’ workshop offers an additional developmental tool for those who work directly with people. It is built on a style of communication and motivation aimed at unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. The methodology focuses on questions that raise awareness (what is happening around the client or patient; raise self-awareness (what they are experiencing personally) and to raise responsibility (take responsibility for their actions and increasing ownership and accountability). \nPractical coaching principles and processes are demonstrated\, elaborated and practiced within the workshop. The workshop involves two full practice sessions of combining the coaching principles\, coaching process (the GROW model) and the listening and speaking skills of the coaching approach. \nA full set of support notes are provided for each participant that covers the principles\, processes and the listening and speaking of the coaching approach. \nTarget Audience \nThe coaching approach can be applied to any\, and all\, human interaction. It is particularly relevant to those engaged in people helping\, people management\, people leadership\, people development and people care. \nSession One:  Defining Coaching and the coaching approach\n\nWhat is coaching?\nCoaching demonstration and debrief\nDistinctions between professions (mentoring\, consultant\, manager\, therapy\, counselling etc)\nListening as a coach – listening ‘to’\, ‘though’\, ‘just’ and the 3 ‘A’s of listening\n\nSession Two:  Coaching with the GROW Model\n\nIntroduction to the GROW model\nWorking with the GROW coaching questions\nCoaching practice and debrief\n\nSession Three: Facilitating a Coaching Conversation\n\nSpeaking with clear intention\nWhat makes a good coaching question?\nGenuine inquiry and unattached advocacy\n\nSession Four: Further Practice Facilitating a Coaching Conversation\n\nCoaching practice\nDebrief and highlight learning applicable to the OT role\n\n  \nAbout the Speaker \nGraham has spent the past 51 years of his life encouraging\, supporting\, and developing people in leadership and management roles. \nGraham has had extensive experience in the Training and Development field\, including initially being instrumental in developing strategic training and development for Youth Workers and young people\, then\, moving into the management and development consultancy field having three interrelated arms or services: Leadership development\, Coaching and Facilitation services and a Training arm. \nGraham completed a Graduate Diploma in Professional Coaching from at the Newfield Institute (Australia) in 2001 that focused on ontological coaching models and frameworks. \nOver the past 8 years Graham has designed and facilitated a program titled ‘Taking the coaching approach’. This program has been used extensively in Saint John of God Health Care hospitals and facilities across Australia to develop health care workers to develop a coaching approach. This year we have two new graduates who would love to share their experience post-graduation. \nSerena graduated in 2022 from Edith Cowan University and started her New Graduate Occupational Therapist role at Therapy Focus. Currently\, she has a mixed caseload which consists of paediatrics and adults with a range of diagnoses which require regular interventions\, assessments\, or assistive technology input. Her areas of interest are fine motor\, sensory processing\, neurological rehabilitation\, postural support\, and assistive technology. She completed her university placements in vocational rehabilitation\, hand therapy\, aged care\, and assistive technology. \nBec graduated from Curtin University in 2022. She currently works in hand therapy at RediMed where she treats a variety of upper limb conditions using different assessments and treatment modalities. Her current role is within the WA Department of Justice (DoJ). Emily has spent the last few years developing a new OT role based in Casuarina Prison (a men’s maximum-security prison) within the Mallee Rehabilitation Centre\, where she supports engagement with the Solid Steps Program. \nSam has been an OT for 31 years\, and currently works within the WA State Forensic Mental Health Services\, primarily as an OT in Frankland Centre\, but more recently as a Senior Project Officer working on projects such as the Criminal Law (Mentally Impaired Accused) Act review\, where she also provides supervision and mentoring to staff (OT and AHA) working in forensic settings. \nJemma has been an OT for 10 years and currently works in a role where she provides a state-wide service to children and adults with an Intellectual Disability\, Cognitive Disability and / or Autism who are interfacing with the justice system\, as well as their support systems. Jemma is also involved in providing clinical support to the Disability Justice Centre; and delivering training about the disability and justice intersection to various departments. \nBook online

Content will also be approachable for disciplines of social work\, speech pathology\, dietetics\, exercise physiology and physiotherapy. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER \nKaleah has over 15 years of clinical experience as an OT in mental health ranging from previous experience in hospital settings (open and secure units) to now owning and operating a private mental health practice for 9 years\, registered under the BAMH program. She is a Credentialed Eating Disorders Clinician (CEDC) and currently provides services to clients ranging from 10 years to 65 years old\, in relation to mental health diagnoses\, eating disorders\, trauma informed care\, pain management and occupational re-engagement. \nKaleah has also been a sessional lecturer\, tutor and unit coordinator for Edith Cowan University teaching in Neuroscience\, Neuropsychiatry\, and Clinical Science. The aims of the course are to provide evidence based information to promote practitioners’ knowledge about: \nGeneral sleep knowledge \n– the importance of sleep and circadian health \n– how sleep works\, sleep disorders\, general resources for sleep support \n2. Targeted occupational therapy sleep knowledge \n– sleep assessment for the home setting \n– practical strategies to promote sleep in everyday living \n– sleep and anxiety\, pain\, movement impairment\, and safety \n– resources (information\, equipment\, people) that are fundamental to practical and individualised sleep support \nUsing the SleepLinks ‘sleep comfort map’ as a guide\, we will cover practical aspects of assessment\, information\, and equipment resources for :- \n– health and medical comfort \n– activities and routines comfort \n– social-emotional-communication comfort \n– thermal comfort \n– sleep setting comfort \n– sensory comfort \n– position and movement comfort \n‘Comfort’ means what is just right\, for each individual and family. \n‘Safety’ means health and medical\, physical and social-emotional safety\, for each individual and family. \nAbout the presenter :- \n Sue McCabe (BScOT\, MSc\, PhD) is the sole provider of SleepLinks occupational therapy service in Perth. She has worked as an occupational therapist for over 40 years in Perth\, NT and the UK\, in hospital\, rehabilitation and community settings\, with people of all ages who have developmental\, neurological\, and musculo-skeletal conditions. \nOver the past 15+ years\, she has become focused on sleep: learning about the huge challenge this can be for so many people with disabilities and health conditions; learning about the massive impact this has on their  health\, wellbeing and participation\, and that of their families; and learning about the complex and diverse factors that are so important to sleep. \nThis learning is most importantly through her contact with the 100’s of clients and families who have described their unique sleep difficulties and the effects on their everyday lives. It has been enhanced by collaboration with colleagues across Perth\, Australia and internationally. Key aspects of her learning have been i) a Churchill Fellowship (2007) which allowed her to travel to  the UK and Canada to attend specialist sleep training courses and to spend time with expert sleep clinicians and researchers\, ii) completion of PhD studies (2019) which allowed her  to learn about research\, and about sleep and biological rhythms\, iii) membership of and participation in national and international sleep research groups and iv) continued research collaboration with sleep and disability researchers across Australia and internationally. \nSue has provided sleep training across the occupational therapy and allied health sector for many years. She has been an invited presenter of sleep training to clinicians in Singapore\, Canada\, New Zealand and across Australia. She contributes sleep information to the Assistive Technology unit for occupational therapy students at Edith Cowan University. She provides targeted sleep information to clinicians working with specific populations such as autism\, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. \nSue is particularly passionate about the importance of sleep within the context of circadian health – our 24 hour rhythms which are so fundamental to all aspects of mental and physical health\, and all aspects of function and participation. He works mainly within the Community Aged Care setting; assisting clients to remain safely in their homes. In 2021 Rebecca took up the challenge of relocating to Kununurra to service the East and West Kimberley regions. Rebecca has a passion for providing quality and culturally sound services to the remote communities of the Kimberley and continues to strive for improved servicing for these clients. Living and working in the Kimberley presents its own unique challenges in providing effective Vocational Rehabilitation services. Thinking outside the box\, building relationships and being open to listening\, learning and reflecting on her own practices have been vital in adapting and implementing\, quality services for her clients in this region. Rebecca will be presenting a case study located in the West Kimberley\, which had her nominated as a finalist for the Outstanding Achievement In Return to Work Award for a Physical claim. \n\n\nTiarn Mahney is an Occupational Therapist who started her career as a Rehabilitation Consultant with WorkFocus Australia as a new graduate in 2022. Tiarn’s final practicum experiences allowed her to strengthen her clinical and case management skills in both community and acute settings\, with her employment background complimenting her understanding of the employment industry and funding schemes with a focus on injury and disability. As a Rehabilitation Consultant\, Tiarn is driven to achieve the best possible outcomes for her clients in the South West and is continually motivated to make meaningful difference to their lives. SUMMARY:Pain from an OT perspective - 2024
DESCRIPTION:  \nChronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for patients\, healthcare professionals and the global healthcare system. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners.  \nThis workshop aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational therapy in chronic pain rehabilitation. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. Topics to be covered include:  \nPain Science Made Simple Learn about the basic neuroscience of pain\, and the interrelationship between physiological\, psychological\, environmental and occupational processes in pain perception.  \nPain Assessment in Occupational Therapy Practice Gain an overview of how to assess patients with pain (acute and chronic)\, and using assessment findings guide diagnostic\, rehabilitation and occupation-related care plans  \nInterventions for Common Clinical Pain Syndromes Explore the different approaches to treat chronic pain\, current available evidence on their efficacy and relevance in various occupational therapy settings. Discover how occupational therapists can implement effective interventions through therapeutic neuroscience education\, psychological approaches\, functional rehabilitation\, soft tissue therapy and assistive technology.  \nThis workshop will be delivered in a casual manner with inspiring recovery stories and short gentle yoga breaks (to make your experience as pain free as possible). She is currently involved with the honors panel for OT Australia\, has developed publications with NSW Health for safe design and aged care facilities\, and has participated in numerous working parties and panels related to service development for HACC Home Modifications Services\, Universal and Adaptable Design. DESCRIPTION:BASIC NEUROLOGY\n\nFRIDAY 3rd May\, 2024 – 9:00 – 16:30\n\nPresented by Carlo Divita.\n\n\n\n\n\nAlthough this course is centered on Basic Neurological Assessment and therefore aims to provide it’s attendees with a greater depth of understanding of why and how specific assessment components are undertaken as part of the role of Occupational Therapists working with individuals with a neurological condition; it also aims to provide a practical understanding of what the assessment results represent and how they will link to Occupational Therapy intervention.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nThe course will cover:  \n\n\n 1 – The basis of why Neurological Assessment is important in Occupational Therapy practice \n\n\n 2 – What components make up a thorough Occupational Therapy Initial Neurological Assessment  \n\n\n 3 – How to implement an Initial Neurological Assessment including practical application of techniques  \n\n\n 4 – The analysis of assessment findings\, as they relate to Occupational Therapy practice  \n\n\n 5 – How to link assessment findings to intervention \n\n\nOn completion of the course\, attendees will be armed with the practical knowledge of how to complete a Basic Neurological Assessment and how to connect it to Occupational Therapy practice.\n\n\nAbout the Presenter.\n\n\nSince graduating from Curtin University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy\, Carlo developed his skills in Neurological Assessment working at Royal Perth Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital in the areas of acute neurosurgery and neurology\, stroke rehabilitation and acquired brain injury rehabilitation. DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Rozanne Biddle and Patrina Bosso – Psychological Worksite Assessments \nRozanne Biddle is an occupational therapist with over 25 years’ experience in injury management and workplace rehabilitation in Perth and Melbourne. Her first job\, after graduating from Curtin University in 1996 was with CRS Australia\, where she had completed her 4th year prac. Rozanne has worked with several workplace rehabilitation providers\, large employers as an injury management advisor and as a rehabilitation claims consultant for a life insurer. \nRozanne has extensive experience in working with clients with mental health conditions and their treatment providers\, including working as an occupational therapist in forensic psychiatry in London. She is a Credentialed Eating Disorders Clinician (CEDC) and currently provides services to clients ranging from 10 years to 65 years old\, in relation to mental health diagnoses\, eating disorders\, trauma informed care\, pain management and occupational re-engagement. \nKaleah has also been a sessional lecturer\, tutor and unit coordinator for Edith Cowan University teaching in Neuroscience\, Neuropsychiatry\, and Clinical Science. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Graham Taylor \nAbout the course  \nThe ‘Taking a coaching approach’ _workshop offers an additional developmental tool for those who work directly with people that is built on a style of communication and motivation aimed at unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. This experience started in the field of Youth Work where he was instrumental in developing strategic training and development for Youth Workers and young people and then\, in the mid 1980’s\, he moved into the management and development consultancy field within organisations. His consultancy has three interrelated arms or services: Leadership development\, Coaching and Facilitation services and a Training arm. \nGraham was first introduced to a ‘formal’ coaching structure in 1994 while working overseas. Her passion and speciality is in Paediatric Ophthalmology\, Neuro-Ophthalmology and childhood development and Low Vision Rehabilitation and has led her to work closely with families with children diagnosed with Cerebral Vision Impairment (CVI) to provide early childhood orthoptic interventions. She specialises in ophthalmic ocular disease\, strabismus diagnosis and management and neuropathology. Jemila graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Health Science\, and completed a Master of Orthoptics and Ophthalmology Sciences. \nRuth Leong – Ruth has worked primarily as an Occupational Therapist in a variety of community settings in Sydney and Perth and as a case manager at Princess Margaret Hospital. Ruth has developed a keen interest in Cerebral Vision Impairment (CVI) as she came across an increasing number of clients with low vision and the impact on their daily activities. DESCRIPTION:Student PD 22nd August \nWAOTA Student Committee is pleased to present New Graduate Experience \nThursday 22nd August 2024 at 6:30pm \nPresenters \nJosephine Sauzier: Josephine graduated in 2023 from Curtin University. After graduating\, she did some contracting work developing an aquatic OT program for Swimming on the Spectrum while she applied for full time work in a hospital.  Currently\, Josephine works at Fiona Stanley and her current rotation is in the State Rehab Service’s neurological ward. Josephine completed a rural and international placement in her fourth year of university. \nAshby Gordon: Ashby graduated from Curtin university in 2023. She currently works as a Rehabilitation Consultant at APM Workcare assisting injured workers return to work following a physical or psychological workplace injury.
