DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Rozanne Biddle and Patrina Bosso – Psychological Worksite Assessments \nRozanne Biddle is an occupational therapist with over 25 years’ experience in injury management and workplace rehabilitation in Perth and Melbourne. Her first job\, after graduating from Curtin University in 1996 was with CRS Australia\, where she had completed her 4th year prac. Rozanne has worked with several workplace rehabilitation providers\, large employers as an injury management advisor and as a rehabilitation claims consultant for a life insurer. \nRozanne has extensive experience in working with clients with mental health conditions and their treatment providers\, including working as an occupational therapist in forensic psychiatry in London. DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY 28th JUNE\, 2024 – 8:30 – 17:00 \nPRESENTED BY KALEAH HAMBROOK \nCOURSE CONTENT :- \nOn completion\, therapists will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the role of thinking and motivation to client engagement\nUnderstand the progression of behaviour; cognitive-behaviour and Mindfulness Based Cognitive therapies.\nUnderstand the interaction of thinking\, emotions and behaviours and their impact on therapeutic engagement and function\nUnderstand and apply schema based approaches across diagnoses (paediatric\, mental health\, pain management\, aged-care\, vocational rehabilitation and family systems approaches)\nProblem solve client engagement and resistance\nApply CBT techniques to own practice area\nApply CBT techniques to trauma informed care\nUtilise CBT for own self management and reflective practitioner outcomes\n\n  \nThe course will be delivered in a practical\, small group interactive manner with demonstrations and handouts provided to utilise with clients. \nTarget audience is OT’s in all practice areas\, including those needing CBT training to be registered for BAMH; mental health\, pain management\, vocational rehabilitation\, paediatrics and family systems approaches\, aged care\, trauma informed care and complex clients. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER \nKaleah has over 15 years of clinical experience as an OT in mental health ranging from previous experience in hospital settings (open and secure units) to now owning and operating a private mental health practice for 9 years\, registered under the BAMH program. She is a Credentialed Eating Disorders Clinician (CEDC) and currently provides services to clients ranging from 10 years to 65 years old\, in relation to mental health diagnoses\, eating disorders\, trauma informed care\, pain management and occupational re-engagement. \nKaleah has also been a sessional lecturer\, tutor and unit coordinator for Edith Cowan University teaching in Neuroscience\, Neuropsychiatry\, and Clinical Science. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Graham Taylor \nAbout the course  \nThe ‘Taking a coaching approach’ _workshop offers an additional developmental tool for those who work directly with people that is built on a style of communication and motivation aimed at unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. The methodology focuses on questions that raise awareness (what is happening around the client or patient; raise self-awareness (what they are experiencing personally) and to raise responsibility (take responsibility for their actions and increasing ownership and accountability). \nSession One: Defining Coaching and the Coaching Approach  \n\nWhat is coaching ?\nCoaching demonstration and debrief\nDistinctions between professions – ( mentoring\, consultant\, therapy\, counselling etc )\nListening as a coach – listening “to”\, “though”\, “just” and the 3 “A’s” of listening\n\nSession Two: Coaching with the GROW Model  \n\nIntroduction to the GROW model\nWorking with the GROW coaching questions\nCoaching practice and debrief\n\nSession Three: Facilitating a Coaching Conversation  \n\nSpeaking with clear intention\nWhat makes a good coaching question ?\nGenuine inquiry and unattached advocacy\n\nSession Four: Further Practice Facilitating a Coaching Conversation \n\nCoaching practice\nDebrief and highlight learning applicable to the OT role\n\nAbout the Presenter  \nGraham Taylor has spent the past 52 years of his life encouraging\, supporting\, and developing people in leadership and management roles. \nHe has extensive experience in Training and Development. This experience started in the field of Youth Work where he was instrumental in developing strategic training and development for Youth Workers and young people and then\, in the mid 1980’s\, he moved into the management and development consultancy field within organisations. His consultancy has three interrelated arms or services: Leadership development\, Coaching and Facilitation services and a Training arm. \nGraham was first introduced to a ‘formal’ coaching structure in 1994 while working overseas. Her passion and speciality is in Paediatric Ophthalmology\, Neuro-Ophthalmology and childhood development and Low Vision Rehabilitation and has led her to work closely with families with children diagnosed with Cerebral Vision Impairment (CVI) to provide early childhood orthoptic interventions. She specialises in ophthalmic ocular disease\, strabismus diagnosis and management and neuropathology. Jemila graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Health Science\, and completed a Master of Orthoptics and Ophthalmology Sciences. \nRuth Leong – Ruth has worked primarily as an Occupational Therapist in a variety of community settings in Sydney and Perth and as a case manager at Princess Margaret Hospital. Ruth has developed a keen interest in Cerebral Vision Impairment (CVI) as she came across an increasing number of clients with low vision and the impact on their daily activities. Ruth graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) and completed a Master in Public Health. \nEmily Truswell – Emily is passionate about improving the quality of life for children with complex disability\, particularly in the field of dual sensory disability/deafblindness. She is currently working at Kinetic Kids WA. The aim of the course is to provide evidence-based information about sleep and circadian science\, translated through the OT lens for practical and individualised application to all client settings. \nThis course will cover \n\nthe importance of sleep and circadian health\nhow sleep works\, sleep disorders\, general resources for sleep support\npractical approaches to sleep assessment in the home setting\npractical strategies to promote sleep in everyday living\npractical resources (information\, equipment\, people) that are fundamental to individualised sleep support\, and safety\n\nUsing the SleepLinks Sleep Comfort Map’ as a guide\, we will cover assessment\, information\, and equipment resources for \n\nhealth and medical comfort\nactivities and routines comfort\nsleep setting comfort\nthermal comfort\nsensory comfort\nsocial-emotional-communication comfort\nposition and movement comfort\n\nYou will learn why sleep and circadian health is a fundamental concern for all OTs\, and how it is ‘all about everything’ (our physical and mental health\, activities\, environments\, personal factors). You will hear client stories which illustrate the individualised and collaborative approach that underpins the OT approach to sleep support. You will learn about practical strategies and resources for contextual assessment and sleep support. You will have hands-on demonstration of equipment options to support sensory comfort\, thermal comfort\, body position support\, mobility and safety for sleep. With the OT lens\, you will learn that ‘Comfort’ means what is just right\, for each person and their family or caregivers; and that ‘Safety’ is about their medical safety\, physical safety and social-emotional safety. \nAbout the presenter :- \n\nSue McCabe (BSc\, MSc\, PhD) is the provider of SleepLinks occupational therapy service in Perth. She has worked as an occupational therapist for over 40 years in Perth\, NT and the UK and has clinical background in rehabilitation\, community and customised-equipment settings. She has worked with people of all ages with developmental\, neurological\, neuro-motor and musculo-skeletal conditions. \n\n\nOver the past 20+ years\, Sue has been focused on sleep and circadian health – recognising the impact of poor sleep on the health\, wellbeing and participation of people with disabilities and physical and mental health conditions (and their families) and learning about the complex and diverse factors of concern. Sue received a Churchill Fellowship in 2006\, visiting UK and Canada to learn from expert clinicians and researchers. She completed PhD studies in 2019\, with research focus on the multiple factors which affect sleep of children with cerebral palsy\, and on understanding thermoregulation during sleep. Sue’s learning is most importantly through her contact with the 100’s of clients and families\, who have described their unique sleep difficulties and the effects on their everyday lives. It is enhanced by ongoing collaboration with colleagues across Perth\, Australia and internationally. \n\n\nSue provides sleep training across the occupational therapy and allied health sector. She has been an invited presenter of sleep and research information to clinicians across Australia and in New Zealand\, Singapore\, Canada\, and the UK. The content will be relevant for those who treat older adults who are approaching the middle to later stages of dementia and end of life. This workshop is also suitable for Occupational Therapy Students who are considering a career with older adults. \nThis workshop will use a mixture of lecture style content\, interactive discussion\, and practical activities. \nThe aims of the course are for participants to: \n\nUnderstand how sensory stimulation can be used with older adults\nIncrease knowledge and confidence in how to assess and treat people in the later stages of dementia\nRecognise the important role that the occupational therapist can play in facilitating quality of life and wellbeing with this client group\n\nContent will include: \n\nRevision of dementia including the different types\, signs\, symptoms\, stages and strengths\nAn overview of sensory stimulation and the benefits to the older population\nExploration into different ways to assess sensory preferences to ensure appropriate sensory activities can be prescribed\nHands on participation in a range of sensory stimulation intervention ideas\nAn opportunity to apply lessons learned to own workplaces by considering the role of the Occupational Therapist\, and barriers and enablers to implementation\n\nParticipants will receive copies of the workshop slides as well as practical resources to support practice. \nAbout the Presenter. \nSince graduating from a double degree of Occupational Therapy and Business Administration from Curtin University\, Elizabeth Oliver has worked in both community and residential care settings for large not-for-profit aged care providers for the past 15 years. During her aged care career\, Elizabeth has lead a range of culture change and care innovation research projects\, and has gained extensive experience in implementing the Montessori Approach as a method of fostering person centred care. \nElizabeth strives to increase the recognition of the value of allied health services to this client group and to improve access to therapeutic interventions that can enhance the functional abilities\, participation\, quality of life and wellbeing of older adults\, particularly those living with dementia. Elizabeth is also committed to inspiring people to consider working in the aged care industry\, and has tutored in the Gerontology Unit at Curtin University for numerous years\, as well as working in Interprofessional Coordinator and Clinical Educator Coordinator roles. \nIn recent years\, Elizabeth has formed her own private practice\, Memory Box Collective\, with an aim to bring joy into the lives of older adults\, through consultancy\, training\, research\, resources and special projects. Memory Box Collective has been the community partner in a number of Curtin University’s Occupational Therapy honours projects. The most recent research project has focused on using Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology students as facilitators of “task boxes” to facilitate meaningful engagement in residential care settings. \nElizabeth is the co-convenor of the Facebook based WA Occupational Therapy Aged Care Interest Group. She has a Certificate IV in Project Management and has won numerous awards including Catholic Health Australia’s Emerging Leader\, Rotary Awards for Innovation and Allied Health Team of the Year\, and Better Practice Awards from the Quality and Safety Agency. Her case study involved a 55-year-old former naval marine technician with PTSD and Major Depressive Disorder. Despite significant barriers\, Gill guided the client through a non-return to work program\, vocational assessment\, and goal setting\, ultimately helping him secure employment in project management with a salary comparable to his naval pay. \nFrances Parkhowell – Outstanding Consultant Awards (Same Employer) \nA Rehabilitation Consultant at Recovre since 2022\, Frances brings a diverse background including geology and entrepreneurship to her recent transition into occupational therapy. Her case study focused on a worker with a serious ankle injury who was initially reluctant to return to work. Through facilitation of specialist case conferences\, addressing safety footwear concerns\, and resolving underlying fears\, Frances helped the worker return to normal duties earlier than expected. \nElise Parker – Outstanding Achievement in Return to Work Award (Physical Claim) \nA Rehabilitation Counsellor and Injury Management Consultant with over 16 years of experience across various industries. Her case study involved a 37-year-old Communications Technician who sustained a complex\, traumatic injury to her left arm. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners. \nThis workshop aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational thera-py in chronic pain rehabilitation. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. Topics to be covered include: \nPain Science Made Simple Learn about the basic neuroscience of pain\, and the interrela-tionship between physiological\, psychological\, environmental and occupational process-es in pain perception. \nPain Assessment in Occupational Therapy Practice Gain an overview of how to assess patients with pain (acute and chronic)\, and using assessment findings guide diagnostic\, rehabilitation and occupation-related care plans \nInterventions for Common Clinical Pain Syndromes Explore the different approaches to treat chronic pain\, current available evidence on their efficacy and relevance in various occupational therapy settings. SUMMARY:Wheelchair Prescription and Seating 2025
DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY JULY 11th\, 2025 \nAbout the Course \nThis full day workshop will be broken down as follows \nIntroduction to seating assessment. \nAn overview of the process and tools of a seating and mobility assessment. What other assessments can be used to support the functional justifications of the recommended solution…..what kind of information do we need to be collecting and why? (Theory and discussion-  A Seating Ax form and powerpoint notes will be provided) \nReview of pelvis and posture \nIn order to work through and understand the postural requirements of our end users\, we need to be able to identify the position and capacity of pelvis positioning. This section of the day will review the bony landmarks of the pelvis and identification of and articulation of seated posture.  An introduction to seating principles will be included.(Whilst this is a theoretical component we will be doing lots of moving and locating of bony landmarks) \nMAT \nMechanical Assessment Tool or as is commonly referred to as MAT provides objective information to guide the capacity of positioning. Anyone who is reliant on a wheelchair for all essential mobility or who is sitting for prolonged periods should potentially undergo a MAT evaluation. This assessment can be overwhelming for therapists new to seating prescription or only doing the occasional seating assessment. This practical component will break down the essentials of the MAT portion of the seating assessment. Attendees will be guided through the pelvis positions and supine portion of the MAT. The aim is to provide clinicians with the tools and confidence to start to complete these assessments. Attendees are encouraged to wear loose comfortable clothing as they will be performing Supine Range of Motion (ROM) assessments and measurements.  The focus will be on pelvis\, hip and knee ranges in relation to a seated position. \nBringing it all together \nSeating principles\, clinical reasoning and identification of points of control to guide the potential trial parameters. \nWe will discuss how the information from the MAT guides the positioning requirements before practising with case examples to simulate potential support requirements \nOpen to all allied health professionals \nAbout the Presenter \nTracee-lee joined Permobil as a Clinical Education Specialist in July 2019.  After gaining a BHSc (Occupational Therapy) in New Zealand\, Tracee-lee initially worked in Vocational Rehabilitation where she was able to develop her task analysis and biomechanical and report writing skills. Tracee-lee had developed a keen interest in mobility while working in a USA camp and respite program and seeing how AT could assist in breaking down barriers and contribute to increased functional capacity. When a position came up at Seating to Go as a wheelchair and seating assessor she joined the team. Tracee-lee spent the next 6 years working there and contributes her assessment and prescription skills too New Zealands top mentorship. Tracee-lee’s first experience in facilitating training was running level one powerchair training under the competency mobility pathway for assessors. \nTracee-lee left NZ 12 years ago to take on the Seating Senior clinical role for custom moulded seating at Northcott (Sydney NSW).  In her time in Australia she has worked  within the seating and mobility areas at multiple levels\, assessment\, educator\, supplier and manufacturer. With the OT lens\, there is opportunity to learn that ‘Comfort’ means\, what is just right\, for each person and their family or caregivers; and that ‘Safety’ is about their medical safety\, physical safety and social-emotional safety. \n\n\nAbout the presenter: \n\n\nSue McCabe (BSc\, MSc\, PhD) is the provider of SleepLinks occupational therapy service in Perth. She has worked as an occupational therapist for over 40 years in Perth\, NT and the UK and has clinical background in rehabilitation\, community and customised-equipment settings. She has worked with people of all ages with developmental\, neurological\, neuro-motor and musculo-skeletal conditions. \n\n\nFor 20+ years\, her focus has been on sleep and circadian health. Sue has recognised the impact of poor sleep on the health\, wellbeing and participation of people with disabilities\, including physical and mental health conditions (and their families). Spending time learning about the complex and diverse factors of concern. Sue received a Churchill Fellowship in 2006\, visiting UK and Canada to learn from expert clinicians and researchers. She completed PhD studies in 2019\, with research focus on the multiple factors affecting sleep of children with cerebral palsy\, and on understanding thermoregulation during sleep. Sue’s expertise and learning is most importantly through her contact with the 100s of clients and families\, describing their unique sleep difficulties and the effects on their everyday lives. Her work is enhanced by ongoing collaboration with colleagues across Perth\, Australia and internationally. It is a common occupational therapy goal for occupational therapists working with children and families\, with widely varied research. It is an essential skill for development\, and something that can impact every area of our life\, at every point. Yet there are such different views of what it actually is\, and how to develop self regulation. \nThis workshop comes from a lens supporting children\, families and adults around children to learn self regulation\, however the concepts and models are applicable across ages. Here are some of the topics that we will cover in this workshop: \n\nWhat is self-regulation? Looking into the differing definitions and perceptions of self regulation in practice\, and society. Self-regulation can be an ambiguous topic so we will go through some of the fields of thought\, and the evidence behind these\, to delve into what self-regulation actually is.\nAn overview of self regulation frameworks and tools\, and the evidence behind these.\nDeveloping self regulation: assessment and intervention approaches for practice.\n\nAbout the Presenters :- \nKate Keisler is an Occupational Therapist who started Calm and Connected in July 2014 to focus on kids with social\, emotional and sensory difficulties. She found that these children were often labelled as ‘naughty’\, rather than their actions meaning that they needed more help. Kate is passionate about giving parents and teachers the knowledge and strategies to support their child. It is often that kids just need to be understood\, parents feel empowered and small practical ideas given to allow kids to feel safe and supported in their own bodies. \nKate has travelled to Melbourne and Sydney for training and mentorship. She has attended courses from leading Occupational Therapists from all over the world. There is always so much more to learn! Kate is passionate about bringing this knowledge to Perth through hosting clinical leaders in Perth and running regular training for therapists.Kate believes in developing the understanding of  Occupational Therapists working in Paediatrics in Perth to provide a high-quality clinical service to families. \nEmily Burns has worked at Calm and Connected since graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy).  Calm and Connected is a private\, community-based practice\, working with children\, families and schools\, including delivering positive behaviour support services. DESCRIPTION:  \nUNDERSTANDING AND APPLYING DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (DBT)  \nIN MENTAL HEALTH OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE  \nFRIDAY 7TH NOVEMBER\, 2025 – 08:30 – 16:30 \nPRESENTED BY IMOGEN MORGAN AND TRACEY ENGELBRECHT \nWorkshop Synopsis and Learning Objectives:  \nThis workshop is tailored for occupational therapists seeking to deepen their understanding of DBT and its application in supporting clients with complex mental health challenges. The session provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to DBT skills and assessment tools\, enabling immediate and practical implementation in diverse mental health settings. \nDBT is a transdiagnostic therapy that integrates mindfulness\, behavioural principles\, and skills training to support clients in increasing effective behaviours while reducing unhelpful behaviours. \nTopics to be covered include: \n\nSkills Training: Mindfulness\, distress tolerance\, emotion regulation\, and interpersonal effectiveness within the context of occupational engagement.\nAssessment: Utilizing the biosocial model to inform occupational performance assessments\, identifying patterns of problem behaviours and risks\, and integrating DBT tools such as diary cards and chain analysis into OT evaluations.\nIntervention: Understanding the DBT framework\, its therapeutic assumptions\, and practical skills training techniques that enhance functional outcomes in daily life.\n\nParticipants will engage in mindfulness exercises\, self-reflection activities\, hands-on practice with DBT tools and case-based discussions. \nComprehensive resources\, including a detailed slide pack\, worksheets\, and references for further exploration\, will equip participants to incorporate these evidence-based approaches into their practice effectively. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS  \nImogen Morgan \nImogen is a Medicare-endorsed Mental Health Occupational Therapist with a wealth of experience across community\, inpatient\, and private practice settings. Currently\, she works in private practice\, specialising in supporting clients with a range of complex mental health challenges including emotional regulation\, anxiety\, depression\, trauma\, and ADHD. \nImogen has facilitated both CBT- and DBT-based group and individual therapy using DBT\, ACT\, CBT and Schema Therapy informed approaches. Her work has consistently focused on helping individuals develop practical strategies to enhance their engagement in meaningful activities. \nCommitted to evidence-based practice\, Imogen aims to bring a compassionate and practical approach to her facilitation\, equipping occupational therapists with tools to integrate DBT principles effectively into their work. \nTracey Engelbrecht \nTracey is a Mental Health Occupational Therapist with extensive experience across inpatient\, outpatient\, and youth mental health settings. Currently\, she is a private practitioner specialising in trauma-informed\, neurodiversity-affirming care and serves as a DBTeen assessor and facilitator at Lifeline WA. \nHer previous experience includes coordinating the Adolescent Intensive Treatment Program at Esus Centre\, where she led DBT skills groups and managed program operations for adolescents recovering from eating disorders. DESCRIPTION:PRESENTED BY SANDI LIGHTFOOT \nAfter the recent success of both the basic and complex course Sandi Lightfoot from the University of Sydney has confirmed to return to Perth and repeat these courses in March 2026. \nSandi Lightfoot is an OT and service manager for a home visiting modification service covering the local government areas of South West Sydney. She has worked for the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney since 1987. Her area of expertise includes environmental modifications\, occupational performance and outcome measures for ensuing that clients’ reach their maximum potential. She is currently involved with the honors panel for OT Australia\, has developed publications with NSW Health for safe design and aged care facilities\, and has participated in numerous working parties and panels related to service development for HACC Home Modifications Services\, Universal and Adaptable Design.
