Amy’s work in a community based school aged intervention service piqued her interest in the area of autism and inclusive education. Amy’s doctoral studies involved developing and evaluating the feasibility\, fidelity and preliminary effectiveness of a school based intervention aimed at improving the school participation and feelings of connectedness of primary school students on the autism spectrum. \nOn Tuesday 5th April at 6.30pm\, Amy will be sharing a brief overview of the intervention (entitled In My Shoes) and findings from the feasibility study conducted across 6 mainstream primary schools in Perth in 2020. Amy will share the benefits and challenges of conducting research in schools and factors that support and hinder the feasibility of school based interventions. This webinar may be of particular interest to Occupational Therapists working in schools or with students on the autism spectrum or with a particular interest in inclusive education.

Safe\, stable and nurturing relationships with caring adults are the building blocks of healthy development and good mental health. Professionals in the early childhood and family field play a key role in promoting and supporting those all-important foundational relationships. \nOTs working with babies\, young children and their families\, particularly those facing chronic adversity\, know this work can be challenging. It requires a complex set of skills\, high levels of professional development and commitment. This means that practitioners also need access to quality training opportunities and reflective experiences that support them in their work. \nIn 2020\, the West Australian Branch of the Australian Association for Infant Mental Health (AAIMH WA) introduced Infant Mental Health (IMH) Endorsement®\, a workforce development and support system. An internationally recognised credential\, IMH Endorsement demonstrates a professional’s experiences and competency in the infant\, early childhood and family field and their commitment to a reflective\, relational approach to their work. Growing evidence indicates that endorsed professionals are better prepared to support the foundational early development of babies and young children\, in the context of their caregiving relationships. \nAnne will discuss this program with us and how it can support us to work with young children and their families.

DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, 7th December 2021\nTime: 6.30pm\nPresenter: Nat O’Neill \nTopic: Dog Assisted Therapy and Autism Assistance Dog Programs \nNat O’Neill\, Occupational Therapist at Kites Therapy \nNat graduated in 2004 and spent many years as a senior OT in community rehab. In 2009 she discovered an organisation called Animal Companions\, who were bringing dogs in to visit patients at SCGH. She signed herself up\, and spent many years volunteering with her own pet dog. She had chosen to study OT because she had always wanted to work with children\, so when the opportunity came up to work with therapy dogs in a paediatric setting she jumped at it. Kites Therapy provides centre based Dog Assisted Therapy with their OTs and also provides Autism Assistance Dogs to work with children and families out in the community. She completed a six month stint on a surgical ward following graduation before moving into various mental health settings across Fiona Stanley and Armadale Health Service. DESCRIPTION:WAOTA students are back again with another interesting topic for our September PD! We hope that you all have been going well. This time\, we have two presenters Alice Boyle\, and Roisin Steadman who are passionate hand therapists currently working in Perth\, WA. \nAlice:\nAlice graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy) in 2012. Upon graduating\, she started working as a hand therapist in Occupational Therapy at Specialised Hand Therapy Services in 2013 and worked there through to the end of 2017. She became an Accredited Hand Therapist with the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) in 2017 and then moved to the UK working in the private and public sectors in London for two years before returning to Australia and working for the Specialised Hand Therapy Services team again in 2020. Whilst away\, Alice worked alongside orthopaedic and plastic surgeons and had the opportunity to attend hand therapy and surgeon conferences as well as courses such as a “Hands-on Dissection Course” in Amsterdam. She has contributed to the hand therapy community by supervising OT students on placement as well as New Graduate therapists and has presented on topics such as Mid-carpal Instability at WAOTA and AHTA hand interest group meetings. \nRoisin:\nRoisin graduated from Edith Cowan University with a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy) in 2012. Upon graduating\, she joined the Specialised Hand Therapy Services team and has worked here ever since to pursue her love of hand therapy. In October 2017\, she was awarded Accreditation Hand Therapist status with the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) and has successfully completed a range of courses\, such as the Advanced Trauma Course\, Orthotic Fabrication Mobilisation Course and the ‘Sarah Mee Wrist Course’. Roisin has presented to both the WAOTA Hand Interest Group and to the AHTA on injuries to the ulnar side of the wrist and has a keen interest in the assessment and treatment of wrist injuries. She regularly supervises OT students on their hand therapy placements and trains New Graduate therapists who join the Specialised Hand Therapy team. \nWith some unique presenters within the highly sought-after field of Hand Therapy\, be sure to purchase your tickets a soon as possible to avoid missing out! Graduating in 2014 from Southern Cross University\, Megan has since had a broad range of experience in a number of areas of OT including\, orthopaedic\, neurological and general medical rehabilitation. Megan also has over 15 years experience as a remedial massage therapist\, having worked the past 6 years with the Australia’s National Women’s football team.  \nHer current interest areas of interest include injury and chronic disease prevention\, persistent pain management and providing positive mental health outcomes. DESCRIPTION:WAOTA Students welcome Anthea Jarvis as our November presenter for professional development. Anthea graduated from Edith Cowan University in 2016 with the WA OT Association Dux Award. Since graduating Anthea has worked across the aged care and disability sectors. She is currently a community OT at Better Rehab in which she works with people who have disabilities across the lifespan. Anthea has a special interest in chronic pain. In 2019 she attended an international conference on updated treatments for chronic pain. DESCRIPTION:WAOTA Students are excited to announce our next PD: Sex and Sexuality with Narelle Higson. \nNarelle has worked for many years in both hospital and community based OT practice with all age groups\, including a 5.5 year stint at the multiple Sclerosis Society of WA as an occupational therapist/sexuality advisor. She currently working with Optimal Living Therapy. \nNarelle’s conviction is that “addressing sexual concerns is everyone’s role.” In 2017 her chapter “Enabling Sexuality” was published in an international OT textbook to encourage students and early career professionals to embrace this area of practice. Her passion for sharing her learning journey and assisting others to embark on their own has seen her present at professional special interest interest groups\, webinars\, numerous state and national conferences and workshops in WA and overseas. \nLocation: Via zoom \nDate: Thursday 15th October \nTime: 6.30pm – 8pm \nZoom Link will be emailed the day before event to your registered email address.
