SUMMARY:Pain from an OT perspective - 2022
DESCRIPTION:THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL. PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST FOR THE WAITLIST OR REPEAT COURSE TO OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CO-ORDINATOR\, CAROLYN EARLE ON C.EARLE@BIGPOND.COM \n \nAbout the course :- \nChronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for patients\, healthcare professionals and the global healthcare system. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners.  \nThis workshop aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational therapy in chronic pain rehabilitation. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. Topics to be covered include:  \nPain Science Made Simple Learn about the basic neuroscience of pain\, and the interrelationship between physiological\, psychological\, environmental and occupational processes in pain perception.  \nPain Assessment in Occupational Therapy Practice Gain an overview of how to assess patients with pain (acute and chronic)\, and using assessment findings guide diagnostic\, rehabilitation and occupation-related care plans  \nInterventions for Common Clinical Pain Syndromes Explore the different approaches to treat chronic pain\, current available evidence on their efficacy and relevance in various occupational therapy settings. Discover how occupational therapists can implement effective interventions through therapeutic neuroscience education\, psychological approaches\, functional rehabilitation\, soft tissue therapy and assistive technology.  \nThis workshop will be delivered in a casual manner with inspiring recovery stories and short gentle yoga breaks (to make your experience as pain free as possible). You will leave with a better foundational knowledge and understanding in this emerging area of practice for occupational therapists.  \nAbout the Presenter :- \nThis workshop will be presented by Ian Cheok who is a senior occupational therapist at LifeWorks Occupational Therapy and TADWA\, where he focuses on chronic pain care\, mental health\, and the use of immersive technologies such as virtual reality in clinical practice. \nIan graduated from Curtin University with a Master of Occupational Therapy degree\, receiving the Head of the School Award and Outstanding Mentor Award.  Additionally\, he has received training from The Neuro Orthopaedic Institute\, and is currently completing his postgraduate studies in chronic pain management with McGill University. \nPrior to his role in occupational therapy\, Ian was a Computer Science graduate from the University of Western Australia\, and had worked for 16+ years in the areas of user experience design and software engineering. \nCourse details :- \nLocation: Pagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como \nDate: Friday 25th February\, 2022 \nTime: 8.00am – 16.00pm \nTopic: Pain from an OT perspective \nPresenter: Ian Cheok \nCost: Early Bird before 25/12/21 \nMember $200 \nRural/remote member $150 \nNon-member $395 \nStudent $100 \nStandard rate after 25/12/21 \nMember $250 \nRural/remote member $185 \nNon-member $395 \nStudent $120 \nBook online\nIf you prefer booking offline\, you can use the registration form below :- \n**PD Registration Form 2021 \nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below. SUMMARY:AAIMH WA Endorsement Program
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday 15th February\nTime: 6.30pm\nPresenter: Anne Lowagie\nZoom details: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89620742703 \nWe know that children’s wellbeing goes hand in hand with the wellbeing of their family. Safe\, stable and nurturing relationships with caring adults are the building blocks of healthy development and good mental health. Professionals in the early childhood and family field play a key role in promoting and supporting those all-important foundational relationships. \nOTs working with babies\, young children and their families\, particularly those facing chronic adversity\, know this work can be challenging. It requires a complex set of skills\, high levels of professional development and commitment. This means that practitioners also need access to quality training opportunities and reflective experiences that support them in their work. \nIn 2020\, the West Australian Branch of the Australian Association for Infant Mental Health (AAIMH WA) introduced Infant Mental Health (IMH) Endorsement®\, a workforce development and support system. An internationally recognised credential\, IMH Endorsement demonstrates a professional’s experiences and competency in the infant\, early childhood and family field and their commitment to a reflective\, relational approach to their work. Growing evidence indicates that endorsed professionals are better prepared to support the foundational early development of babies and young children\, in the context of their caregiving relationships. \nAnne will discuss this program with us and how it can support us to work with young children and their families.

SUMMARY:Taking the Coaching Approach 2021
DESCRIPTION:THIS COURSE IS FULLY BOOKED OUT – IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING A REPEAT COURSE PLEASE EMAIL OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CO-ORDINATOR\, CAROLYN EARLE ON C.EARLE@BIGPOND.COM \nTAKING THE COACHING APPROACH \nGRAHAM TAYLOR \nFRIDAY JULY 23RD \n About the course. \nThe ‘Taking a coaching approach’ workshop offers an additional developmental tool for those who work directly with people that is built on a style of communication and motivation aimed at unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. The methodology focuses on questions that raise awareness (what is happening around the client or patient; raise self-awareness (what they are experiencing personally) and to raise responsibility (take responsibility for their actions and increasing ownership and accountability). \nPractical content \nPractical coaching principles and processes are demonstrated\, elaborated and practiced within the workshop. The workshop involves two full practice sessions of combining the coaching principles\, coaching process (the GROW model) and the listening and speaking skills of the coaching approach. \nMaterial Provided \nA full set of support notes are provided for each participant that covers the principles\, processes and the listening and speaking of the coaching approach. \nTarget Audience \nThe coaching approach can be applied to any\, and all\, human interaction. It is particularly relevant to those engaged in people helping\, people management\, people leadership\, people development and people care. \nSession One:  Defining Coaching and the Coaching Approach \n\nWhat is coaching?\nCoaching demonstration and debrief\nDistinctions between professions (mentoring\, consultant\, manager\, therapy\, counselling etc)\nListening as a coach – listening ‘to’\, ‘though’\, ‘just’ and the 3 ‘A’s of listening\n\nSession Two: Coaching with the GROW Model \n\nIntroduction to the GROW model\nWorking with the GROW coaching questions\nCoaching practice and debrief\n\nSession Three: Facilitating a Coaching Conversation \n\nSpeaking with clear intention\nWhat makes a good coaching question?\nGenuine inquiry and unattached advocacy\n\nSession Four: Further Practice Facilitating a Coaching Conversation \n\nCoaching practice\nDebrief and highlight learning applicable to the OT role\n\nAbout the Speaker \nGraham has spent the past 51 years of his life encouraging\, supporting\, and developing people in leadership and management roles. \nGraham has had extensive experience in the Training and Development field. This experience started in the field of Youth Work where he was instrumental in developing strategic training and development for Youth Workers and young people and then\, in the mid 1980’s\, he moved into the management and development consultancy field within organisations. His consultancy has three interrelated arms or services: Leadership development\, Coaching and Facilitation services and a Training arm. \nOver the 37 years Graham has built up a formidable client base that includes small to large business enterprises\, government organisations and ‘not for profit’ groups covering such sectors as health\, human services\, education and training\, oil and gas\, mining\, finance\, and manufacturing. Over the past 26 years there has been a clear bent toward leadership development and the powerful process of coaching. Today\, within the scope of the ‘three arms of the consultancy’ up to three quarters of Graham’s professional time is focussed on Executive Coaching (coaching leaders and managers) within a wide range of organisations. \nGraham was first introduced to a ‘formal’ coaching structure in 1994 while working overseas. The coaching model provided a powerful structure and a use of linguistic tools that clearly assisted clients (and himself!) in developing the inner person and producing possibilities and options that did not seem visible outside of coaching. This in turn led to a pursuit of coaching models and methodology that peaked in the completion of a Graduate Diploma in Professional Coaching from the Newfield Institute (Australia) in 2001 that focused on ontological coaching models and frameworks. \nIn the past 20 years Graham has coached around 480 people for a total in excess of 500 coaching hours. He is usually coaching between 35 – 45 clients at any given time. His coaching tends to move in and out of what he likes to call ‘Outer Work’ and ‘Inner Work’. Outer Work being coaching for performance – to do with setting and achieving goals and choosing and executing actions. Inner Work relates to coaching for ‘being’ and is to do with beliefs\, values\, purpose\, and confidence. \nOver the past 8 years Graham has designed and facilitated a program titled ‘Taking the coaching approach’. This program has been used extensively in Saint John of God Health Care hospitals and facilities across Australia to develop health care workers to develop a coaching approach. It has also been used extensively in the WA Health Department\, including Country Health (WACHS). \nQualifications/accreditations \n\nBachelor of Commerce\, University of Western Australia (1977)\nDiploma in Ontological Coaching (2001)\nModules 1-3\, Advanced Diploma of Ontological Coaching (2006 – 13)\nCertified Ontological and Leadership Program (2019)\nDiploma in Leadership and Management\, ETAS Group (2016)\nDiploma of Management\, ETAS Group (2014)\nDiploma of Public Administration\, Perth Technical College (1971)\nCertificate 4 in Training and Assessment\, ETAS Group (1999)\nProfessional Certified Coach (PCC)\, ICF (2008)\nExperience in debriefing Lifestyles Inventory\, DISC profile and Myers Briggs in a coaching context\nCo-Director of Programs (2011) and Faculty member of Coach School (2004 – 2013)\n\n\n\n\nTaking the Coaching Approach\n\n\nDate\nFriday July 23rd 2021 \n08:30 – 16:30\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost \n  \n  \n \nEarly bird before 23/6/21 \nMember $200.00 \nRural/remote member $150.00 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStudent $100.00 \nStandard rate after 23/6/21 \nMember $250.00 \nRural/remote member $187.50 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStudent $120.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\nBook Online\nIf you prefer booking offline\, you can use the registration form below :- \n**PD Registration Form 2021 \nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below.
