SUMMARY:Pain from an OT perspective
DESCRIPTION:About the Course \nChronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for patients\, healthcare professionals and the global healthcare system. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners. \n  \nThis course aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational therapy in chronic pain care. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. \nTopics to be covered include: \n\nPain Science Made Simple\nLearn about the basics of pain science\, and the interrelationship between physiological\, psychosocial\, environmental and occupational processes in pain perception. Keep up-to-date with the latest findings in pain neuroscience research. We promise to keep it engaging and not drown you in a sea of scientific jargon.\nPain Evaluation in Occupational Therapy Practice\nGain an overview of how to assess people with acute and chronic pain\, and using assessment findings guide diagnostic\, rehabilitation and occupation-based care plans.\n\nEvidence-based Interventions for Clinical Pain Conditions\nExplore the different approaches to address chronic pain\, current available evidence on their efficacy and relevance in various occupational therapy settings. Discover how occupational therapists can implement effective interventions such as therapeutic neuroscience education\, psychological approaches\, functional rehabilitation\, and practical strategies at home and in the community. \n\nFuture Directions\nWe will explore the emergence of immersive healthcare technologies such as VIRTUAL REALITY\, and how they are being used today in pain care. Get the latest scoop on the research in these areas and how they are relevant to occupational therapy.\n\n  \nThis workshop will be delivered in a casual manner (to make it as pain free as possible)\, peppered with recovery stories and engaging discussions. You will leave with a better foundational knowledge and understanding in this emerging area of practice for occupational therapists. \nGoogle 3D glasses will be provided at this course  \nfor attendees to use and take home. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nIan Cheok is a senior occupational therapist at Lifeworks Occupational Therapy. He completed his Occupational Therapy training at Curtin University\, receiving the Head of the School Award and Outstanding Mentor Award. Additionally\, he has received training in chronic pain management from McGill University and The Neuro Orthopaedic Institute. Prior to his role in occupational therapy\, Ian had graduated from the University of Western Australia with a degree in Computer Science\, and had worked for 15+ years in the areas of user experience design and software engineering. He brings a unique blend of clinical and technology skills to his clinical practice. \nAt LifeWorks\, Ian’s primary areas of focus include chronic pain care\, mental health recovery and neurorehabilitation. He also has a deep interest in immersive and assistive technologies in healthcare. She currently working with Optimal Living Therapy. \nNarelle’s conviction is that “addressing sexual concerns is everyone’s role.” In 2017 her chapter “Enabling Sexuality” was published in an international OT textbook to encourage students and early career professionals to embrace this area of practice. DESCRIPTION:BASIC NEUROLOGICAL ASSESSMENT –– CARLO DIVITA \nFRIDAY JULY 17th\, 2020 \nAbout the Course \nAlthough this course is centered on Basic Neurological Assessment and therefore aims to provide it’s attendees with a greater depth of understanding of why and how specific assessment components are undertaken as part of the role of Occupational Therapists working with individuals with a neurological condition; it also aims to provide a practical understanding of what the assessment results represent and how they will link to Occupational Therapy intervention. \nThe course will cover: \n– The basis of why Neurological Assessment is important in Occupational Therapy practice \n– What components make up a thorough Occupational Therapy Initial Neurological Assessment \n– How to implement an Initial Neurological Assessment including practical application of techniques \n– The analysis of assessment findings\, as they relate to Occupational Therapy practice \n– How to link assessment findings to intervention \nOn completion of the course\, attendees will be armed with the practical knowledge of how to complete a Basic Neurological Assessment and how to connect it to Occupational Therapy practice. \nThe course will include opportunities for observation and practice of assessment techniques and learning through a range of mediums including audio-visual\, group discussion and in-vivo practice. \nThe course is aimed at Occupational Therapists who have either limited experience in Neurological Assessment or would like to develop greater confidence in this area. \nAbout the Presenter \nSince graduating from Curtin University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy\, Carlo developed his skills in Neurological Assessment working at Royal Perth Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital in the areas of acute neurosurgery and neurology\, stroke rehabilitation and acquired brain injury rehabilitation. DESCRIPTION:Presenter Amy Hodges is an Occupational therapist and the primary author of In My Shoes\, a school based intervention that she developed as part of her doctoral studies that aims to improve the school participation and connectedness of students with autism in mainstream primary schools. Amy will share with you the journey that led to the development of In My Shoes\, including key findings from her research and will also share some of the resources of the program including dramatised videos and comic-strip style illustrations. DESCRIPTION:NDIS\, MY HEALTH RECORD\, RISK OF FRAUD AND WORKCOVER WA  \nA PRIVATE PRACTICE UPDATE \nIn response to many members requests WAOTA is delighted to present a day workshop covering these essential areas relating to private practice. This course is subsidized to enable as many private practitioners and other interested OT’s to attend. The workshop will have 4 engaging presenters on each of the above topics. It’s a jam packed day where you will surely come away with far greater knowledge in these areas. \nNDIS 101 – Danielle Loizou-Lake \nThis presentation will cover the fundamentals for Occupational Therapists operating within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).  Areas covered include: \n\nRegistered v’s Non-Registered NDIS Provider\nScope of Practice\nOpportunities\nOperating within the NDIS framework\nQuality and Safeguarding considerations\n\nThere will be time to ask questions on these topics and other NDIS related matters of interest. \nAbout the Presenter \nDanielle Loizou-Lake has been working in the disability sector for six years and saw the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme to Western Australia while employed at an assistive technology and allied health provider as their strategic projects manager.  Danielle currently works for the peak body National Disability Services\, supporting the West Australian disability sector to transition their services and operations to the NDIS marketplace. \nMY HEALTH RECORD – Simon Benge \nWA Primary Health Alliance will walk through the current position of the My Health Record across the state and country\, providing information about how the record may be accessed and what sort of information is available to support your clients. \nThe session will offer practical advice on how organisations can register for access to the record\, how it may be best integrated into practice and the legal responsibilities that underpin the safe use of the My Health Record System. \nAbout the Presenter \nSimon Benge is a My Health Record Team Leader at WA Primary Health Alliance which  shapes\, strengthens and sustains a health system that works for people\, to achieve better health care\, particularly for those most at risk of poor health outcomes. \nRISK OF FRAUD – Wayne Stone \nA Private Health Insurance industry view of the risk and prevalence of healthcare fraud\, the measures taken to detect and react to concerns and the obligations of providers through audit. \nAbout the Presenter \nWayne is the Head of Integrity at HBF Health Ltd.  An experienced executive manager with over 20 years’ experience in leadership of public/ private\, profit and NFP organisations he has a background formed in governance\, as a former Director of Investigations for the UK’s NHS Counter Fraud Service and Detective with the UK’s National Crime Squad & Metropolitan Police. In his current role\, as the Head of the HBF Integrity team\, he is responsible for oversight of HBF’s benefit spend\, ensuring that benefits are being paid appropriately \nWORKCOVER WA – Cathy Thomas \nFrom July 2018 to July 2019 Cathy Thomas and Lisa Browne were involved in the ‘WorkCover WA OT Working Group’ representing WAOTA and WA OT clinicians working the area of Hand and Upper Limb Rehabilitation. Together with WorkCover WA and representatives from General Insurance Groups and Self-Insurer Groups\, the WorkCover WA OT Working Group developed a ‘Notice’ to clarify the principles and rules applicable to upper limb services provided by Occupational Therapists in regard to consultations\, reporting\, Treatment Management Plans (TMPs) and costs of consumables\, as well as the development of a Treatment Management Plan (TMP) for OT Upper Limb Services and a Model Example TMP. \nWhile the project was specifically aimed at clarifying the rules and procedures surrounding OT Upper Limb Services for WorkCover patients\, Cathy will be able to give insights into the consultation process and the outcomes\, which have wider implications for the treatment of other WorkCover patients receiving OT Services in private practice. There will also be an opportunity to work through the Model TMP and ask Cathy directly about the process and the expectations for treatment of WorkCover patients in WA. \nAbout the Presenter \nCathy Thomas has over 30 years’ experience as an Occupational Therapist in the field of Hand & Upper Limb Therapy\, with over 24 of those being in private practice as the owner and Director of Specialised Hand Therapy Services. She has been a WAOTA member since graduating as an OT in 1985\, and in conjunction with Sandy Kevill\, the WAOTA Private Practice Owner’s Group Representative since 2006. She has worked for the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney since 1987. Her area of expertise includes environmental modifications\, occupational performance and outcome measures for ensuing that clients’ reach their maximum potential. She is currently involved with the honors panel for OT Australia\, has developed publications with NSW Health for safe design and aged care facilities\, and has participated in numerous working parties and panels related to service development for HACC Home Modifications Services\, Universal and Adaptable Design. She is also a foundation member and the NSW Health representative on the Home Modification Clearing House based at the University of NSW. \nThe complex course will include complex bathrooms for conceptual designs\, major ramps and lift considerations and kitchen design.
