SUMMARY:Hand and Brain ( PNI and Guided Plasticity) – Day 2 An in depth approach.
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Associate Professor Birgitta Rosèn ( from Sweden ). \nIt is with great excitement that the WA OT Association presents two day workshops by Birgitta Rosen\, an international leader in the field of neuroplasticity and rehabilitation for OT Week 2019. \nBirgitta is an Associate Professor and an experienced occupational therapist. With over 40 years’ experience\, Birgitta has a special interest in nerve injuries and their associated rehabilitation – sensory re-learning using guided plasticity or extrinsic modulation of brain plasticity mechanisms\, and sensory feedback in hand prostheses. She is very widely published\, with 83 original scientific articles and 6 book chapters in the field. Birgitta currently holds a position at Lund University\, Germany\, with a combination of clinical work at the Department of Hand Surgery\, Malmö and lecturing and research at the Department of Health Sciences Lund University\, a position she has held since 2009. She has been an invited speaker to the Philadelphia Hand Meeting twice\, as well as the Australian Hand Therapy Association National Conference in 2004\, and was awarded The Inaugural Cristina Alegri Award\, IFSHT Congress\, Buenos Aires 2016 for her contribution to the understanding of the hand and sensibility. \nAcross the two days Birgitta will present masterclasses of ‘Hand and Brain – an evidence-based rehabilitation approach to peripheral nerve conditions and how to use guided plasticity’. Treatment techniques applicable beyond nerve injuries using guided plasticity will also be discussed\, in an evidence based perspective that can be applicable in a variety of rehab settings. \nParticipants can attend either or both days \nObjectives \nAfter attending day 1\, the participant will have a deeper understanding of: \n-The neuroscientific base for new strategies for re-learning based on use of guided plasticity \n-The importance of sensory and motor re-learning and use of guided plasticity in early and late postoperative phase following a nerve injury (phase 1 before any reinnervation has occurred\, phase 2 when some reinnervation has occurred). \n-Basic components in assessment of hand function following nerve conditions. \nAfter attending day 2\, the participant will have a deeper understanding and practical skills of: \n-Application of new strategies for re-learning/re-education based on guided plasticity. \n-Basic components in assessment of hand function following nerve conditions and use of the Model Instrument for outcome after nerve repair – ”Rosen score”. \nHand And Brain – An Evidence-Based Rehabilitation Approach To Peripheral Nerve Conditions And How To Use Guided Plasticity – An Indepth Approach \nDate Sunday 27th October 2019\nTime 8:00 – 17:00 \nVenue Pagoda Ballroom\, Pagoda Resort\,\n112 Melville Parade\, Como \nCost Early bird before 26/9/19\nMember $200 \nRural/ remote $150 \nNon-members $395 \nStudent $100 \nStandard rate after 26/9/19 \nMember $250 \nRural/ remote $175 \nNon-members $395 \nStudent $120 \nRefreshments Welcome coffee/tea\, morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea provided \nBook Online\nIf you prefer booking offline\, you can use the form below:\nPD-registration-form-2019

SUMMARY:OT Experiences of Working with Hypoxic-Ischaemic Brain Injury Clients
DESCRIPTION:The Neuroscience Interest Group next meeting is:\nLooking at OT experiences of working with hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury clients\, including their role\, enablers and barriers for practice.\nWednesday 26th June 2019\n5.30-6.30pm. (Free parking – large car park located next door) \nPresenter:  Sara Van Reeken – Neuro Research Project presented – needs OT’s input – focus group \nAbout Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury  \nHypoxic-ischaemic brain injury (HIBI) is damage caused to the brain by a reduction of oxygen thereby causing problems with cognition and function The most common cause of HIBI is cardiac arrest\, which has increasing prevalence as those surviving from cardiac arrest is increasing. Currently\, the literature on cognitive function post-cardiac arrest is limited\, especially for those with mild to moderate symptoms and the role of occupational therapy assessment and intervention needs further research. \nStudy Aims and Methods  \nThe aim of this study is to explore the role of occupational therapy in an acute hospital setting for people with suspected mild to moderate cognitive and functional impairments after HIBI. \nThe current literature will be reviewed surrounding the clinical profile and therapy assessment and intervention for this population. The occupational therapy practices\, perspectives as well as enablers and barriers when working with HIBI patients will then be explored This will be completed through a survey and then collect more detailed responses in a focus group. Using the information gathered\, recommendations for clinical practice will be constructed \nSignificance of Project \nThe result of this project will provide occupational therapists with comprehensive recommendations which are evidenced-based and informed by current practice. This will strengthen and develop the occupational therapy role in the neuroscience acute setting and improve services for those with HIBI. \nIt is essential that we hear the perspectives from as many occupational therapists in acute settings as possible By participating in this survey and/or focus group\, you are strengthening the occupational therapy evidence base and improving services for patients. For your participation in the project\, you will be supplied with the recommendation for practice that are constructed\, as well as focus group and survey results. \nThe NSIG is an affiliated interest group of the WA OT Association. Our costs in 2019\, are as follows: Presenter / Members of WA OT Association = Free\, Non-members $10 per session. \nWe hope to see you there at our next meeting\, best wishes from Therese Trouchet (Convener) and Jasmina Maric (Treasurer) \nWe are still keen to hear from anyone who may be able to present on a topic\, that you feel might be of interest to the group – if you feel you would like to contribute or have any ideas on topics -please contact me. \nWe are actively seeking OT’s who can assist the NSIG in any capacity. \nTherese has had 2 surgeries\, medically unwell for many months (unable to talk /eat post jaw fractured in 4 places)  and has been unable to assist NSIG. Sending my apologies for not being in a position to do any volunteer work for OT NSIG. Would really appreciate if others can assist. \nTo join the NSIG or for further information\, please contact  Therese Trouchet (Snr OT Consultant) Convenor Neuroscience Interest Group \nPhone: 9367 6136 \nMobile: 0437 475 668 \nEmail: theresetrouchet@iinet.net.au
