SUMMARY:Pain from an OT Perspective - 2023
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ian Cheok.\nChronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for patients\, healthcare professionals and the global healthcare system. Pain science can be quite disheartening as a topic – as there are no magic bullets or quick fixes in treating chronic pain. This can make engaging with this condition difficult\, with the result that occupational therapists might choose to avoid exploring this area. Of all the approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain\, occupational therapy shows some of the most promising results but remains relatively unknown to the public and other healthcare practitioners. \nThis workshop aims to introduce pain science and unveil the role of occupational therapy in chronic pain rehabilitation. The goal is to take the science and help occupational therapists translate it into tangible\, clinical concepts and tools. It is suitable for new or experienced therapists wishing to gain a broader understanding in this area. We will be reviewing the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain. Topics to be covered include: \nPain Science Made Simple Learn about the basic neuroscience of pain\, and the interrelationship between physiological\, psychological\, environmental and occupational processes in pain perception. \nPain Assessment in Occupational Therapy Practice Gain an overview of how to assess patients with pain (acute and chronic)\, and using assessment findings guide diagnostic\, rehabilitation and occupation-related care plans. \nInterventions for Common Clinical Pain Syndromes Explore the different approaches to treat chronic pain\, current available evidence on their efficacy and relevance in various occupational therapy settings. Discover how occupational therapists can implement effective interventions through therapeutic neuroscience education\, psychological approaches\, functional rehabilitation\, soft tissue therapy and assistive technology. \nThis workshop will be delivered in a casual manner with inspiring recovery stories and short gentle yoga breaks (to make your experience as pain free as possible). You will leave with a better foundational knowledge and understanding in this emerging area of practice for occupational therapists. \nAbout the Presenter.\nIan Cheok is a senior occupational therapist at LifeWorks Occupational Therapy and TADWA\, where he focuses on chronic pain care\, mental health\, and the use of immersive technologies such as virtual reality in clinical practice. \nIan graduated from Curtin University with a Master of Occupational Therapy degree\, receiving the Head of the School Award and Outstanding Mentor Award.  Additionally\, he has received training from The Neuro Orthopaedic Institute\, and is currently completing his postgraduate studies in chronic pain management with McGill University. \nPrior to his role in occupational therapy\, Ian was a Computer Science graduate from the University of Western Australia\, and had worked for 15+ years in the areas of user experience design and software engineering. \n\n\n\nDate\nFriday February 17th\, 2023 \n08:00 – 16:00\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost\nEarly bird before 17/12/22 \nMember/Student $200.00 \nRural/remote member $150.00 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStandard rate after 17/12/22 \nMember/Student $250.00 \nRural/remote member $187.50 \nNon-members $395.00\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\nBook Online\n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Sleep
DESCRIPTION:Presented by – Sue McCabe \nAbout the course :- \nThis introductory course is targeted to OTs across all sectors (all conditions\, all age groups). The aims of the course are to provide evidence based information to promote practitioners’ knowledge about: \n1.General sleep knowledge \n– the importance of sleep and circadian health \n– how sleep works\, sleep disorders\, general resources for sleep support \n2.Targeted occupational therapy sleep knowledge \n– sleep assessment for the home setting \n– practical strategies to promote sleep in everyday living \n– sleep and anxiety\, pain\, movement impairment\, and safety \n– resources (information\, equipment\, people) that are fundamental to practical and individualised sleep support \nUsing the SleepLinks ‘sleep comfort map’ as a guide\, we will cover practical aspects of assessment\, information\, and equipment resources for \n– health and medical comfort \n– activities and routines comfort \n– social-emotional-communication comfort \n– thermal comfort \n– sleep setting comfort \n– sensory comfort \n– position and movement comfort \n  \n‘Comfort’ means what is just right\, for each individual and family. \n‘Safety’ means health and medical\, physical and social-emotional safety\, for each individual and family. \n  \nAbout the presenter :- \nSue McCabe (BScOT\, MSc\, PhD) is the sole provider of SleepLinks occupational therapy service in Perth. She has worked as an occupational therapist for over 40 years in Perth\, NT and the UK\, in hospital\, rehabilitation and community settings\, with people of all ages who have developmental\, neurological\, and musculo-skeletal conditions. \nOver the past 15+ years\, she has become focused on sleep: learning about the huge challenge this can be for so many people with disabilities and health conditions; learning about the massive impact this has on their  health\, wellbeing and participation\, and that of their families; and learning about the complex and diverse factors that are so important to sleep. \nThis learning is most importantly through her contact with the 100’s of clients and families who have described their unique sleep difficulties and the effects on their everyday lives. It has been enhanced by collaboration with colleagues across Perth\, Australia and internationally. Key aspects of her learning have been i) a Churchill Fellowship (2007) which allowed her to travel to  the UK and Canada to attend specialist sleep training courses and to spend time with expert sleep clinicians and researchers\, ii) completion of PhD studies (2019) which allowed her  to learn about research\, and about sleep and biological rhythms\, iii) membership of and participation in national and international sleep research groups and iv) continued research collaboration with sleep and disability researchers across Australia and internationally. \nSue has provided sleep training across the occupational therapy and allied health sector for many years. She has been an invited presenter of sleep training to clinicians in Singapore\, Canada\, New Zealand and across Australia. She contributes sleep information to the Assistive Technology unit for occupational therapy students at Edith Cowan University. She provides targeted sleep information to clinicians working with specific populations such as autism\, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. \nSue is particularly passionate about the importance of sleep within the context of circadian health – our 24 hour rhythms which are so fundamental to all aspects of mental and physical health\, and all aspects of function and participation. Sleep is ‘all about everything’ – physical and mental health\, activities\, environments\, personal factors – and is a fundamental concern for all occupational therapists. \n\n\n\nDate\nFriday October 7th\, 2022 \n09:00 – 17:00\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost\nEarly bird before 7/8/22 \nMember/Student $200.00 \nRural/remote member $150.00 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStandard rate after 7/8/22 \nMember/Student $250.00 \nRural/remote member $185.00 \nNon-members $395.00\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\nBook Online\nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below. SUMMARY:Taking the Coaching Approach 2022
DESCRIPTION:About the course: \nThe ‘Taking a coaching approach’ workshop offers an additional developmental tool for those who work directly with people. It is built on a style of communication and motivation aimed at unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Rather than ‘telling\, directing and instructing’ the coaching approach aims at developing internal or self-motivation – aiming at the ‘inner person’ rather than external motivators. It is aimed at helping a person learn rather than teaching them. \nThe aim of the workshop is to provide coaching principles and processes and practice sessions to consolidate within people helpers a methodology that taps into the potential that exists within the client or patient. The methodology focuses on questions that raise awareness (what is happening around the client or patient; raise self-awareness (what they are experiencing personally) and to raise responsibility (take responsibility for their actions and increasing ownership and accountability). \nPractical coaching principles and processes are demonstrated\, elaborated and practiced within the workshop. The workshop involves two full practice sessions of combining the coaching principles\, coaching process (the GROW model) and the listening and speaking skills of the coaching approach. \nA full set of support notes are provided for each participant that covers the principles\, processes and the listening and speaking of the coaching approach. \nTarget Audience \nThe coaching approach can be applied to any\, and all\, human interaction. SUMMARY:Self Regulation 2022
DESCRIPTION:Self-regulation is a skill everyone needs to thrive across all ages. It is a common occupational therapy goal for occupational therapists working with children and families\, and also one which has very varied research. It is considered to be an essential skill for development\, and something that can impact every area of our life\, at every point. Yet there are such different views of what it actually is\, and how to develop self-regulation. \nThis workshop comes from a lens supporting children\, families and adults around children to learn self-regulation\, however the concepts and models are applicable across ages. Here are some of the topics that we will cover in this workshop: \n\nWhat is self-regulation? Looking into the differing definitions and perceptions of self-regulation in practice\, and society. Self-regulation can be an ambiguous topic so we will go through some of the fields of thought\, and the evidence behind these\, to delve into what self-regulation actually is.\nAn overview of self-regulation frameworks and tools\, and the evidence behind these.\nDeveloping self-regulation: assessment and intervention approaches for practice.\n\nAbout the Presenter :- \nEmily Burns has worked at Calm and Connected since graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy).  Calm and Connected is a private\, community-based practice\, working with children\, families and schools\, including delivering positive behaviour support services. In addition to individualised services\, Calm and Connected run therapy camps throughout the year\, which Emily has been a team leader on since the first camp in Perth\, in 2015. Emily has jointly presented with Kate Keisler at guest lectures at both Curtin University and Edith Cowan University and has presented many other workshops online\, and face to face on topics such as self-regulation and sensory processing. \n\n\n\nDate\nFriday June 10th\, 2022 \n08:30 – 16:30\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost\nEarly bird before 10/5/22 \nMember $200.00 \nRural/remote member $150.00 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStudent $100.00 \nStandard rate after 10/5/22 \nMember $250.00 \nRural/remote member $185.00 \nNon-members $395.00 \nStudent $120.00\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\nBook Online\nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below. The intervention approach aims to improve task performance mastery by addressing the specific cognitive strategy application behaviours identified through PRPP assessment as most impacting on mastery. \nInstructional methods used to address these behaviours incorporate cues and prompts that align with specific perceive\, recall\, plan and perform processing operations and preferences. The efficacy of this approach has been observed in children and adults with a variety of diagnoses and conditions that impact on everyday cognition and demonstrated through research with adults with traumatic brain impairment and children with social and behavioural difficulties.  \n Objectives  \nCompare and Contrast PRPP Intervention with other forms of occupational therapy task-focused methods  \nSelect critical strategy application behaviours to address in therapy  \nSet measurable occupational performance goals for task mastery and strategy application  \nDesign a detailed plan to build strategy application behaviours required to improve or maintain performance mastery.  \n\n\n\nPRPP Intervention Course ( 4 day course )\n\n\nDate\nMonday 30th May – Thursday 2nd June\, 2022 \n08:30 – 16:30\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost \n  \n  \n \nEarly bird before 31/3/22 \nMember $840.00 \nRural/remote member $680.00 \nNon-members $1660.00 \nStudent $440.00 \nStandard rate after 31/3/22 \nMember $1080.00 \nRural/remote member $800.00 \nNon-members $1660.00 \nStudent $520.00\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\n  \nBook Online\nIf you prefer booking offline\, you can use the registration form below. \n**PD Registration Form 2021 \nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below. SUMMARY:PRPP - Assessment Course
DESCRIPTION:THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL\, IF YOU WISH TO BE PLACED ON THE WAITING LIST IN CASE OF A CANCELLATION OVER THE WEEKEND PLEASE EMAIL OUR PD CO-ORDINATOR \nCAROLYN EARLE ON C.EARLE@BIGPOND.COM  \nPresented by – Dr Chris Chapparo and Dr Judy Ranka. \nThe PRPP (Perceive Recall Plan Perform) Assessment is a standardised\, client centred\, criterion referenced\, occupational therapy assessment of occupational performance. It is used with clients of any age\, gender\, diagnosis\, or cultural background whose performance is compromised by difficulties with the cognitive demands of occupations. \nThe assessment yields information about performance mastery and cognitive strategy application behaviours. Strategy application behaviours assessed align with dimensions of attention and perception (P)\, learning\, memory and recall (R)\, planning\, decision-making and judgment (P)\, and the capacity to act on decisions and follow-through with plans (P). \nFindings from the PRPP Assessment are then used to plan PRPP intervention where the focus is on developing strategy application behaviours required by everyday tasks and to improve task performance mastery. The PRPP assessment is used internationally and has been translated into several languages. It has established validity in a variety of practice domains including neurology\, mental health\, learning disabilities\, autism\, chronic pain\, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders\, and dementia.  \nObjectives  \nDescribe the occupational therapy\, neurosciences and educational foundation of the assessment\, and its psychometric properties  \nAssess and score task performance mastery from videotaped examples of client performances using Stage One of the PRPP Assessment  \nAssess and score cognitive strategy application behaviours applied to tasks on dimensions of perceive\, recall\, plan and perform from videotaped examples of client performances using Stage Two of the PRPP Assessment.  \nWrite specific\, measurable mastery and strategy application goals for clients assessed.  \nUse the PRPP Assessment as a client centred outcome measure of occupational performance.  \nUnderstand the implications of assessment findings for occupational therapy intervention.  \n\n\n\nPRPP Assessment Course ( 5 day course )\n\n\nDate\nMonday 23rd May – Friday 27th May\, 2022 \n08:30 – 16:30\n\n\nVenue\nPagoda Conference Room\, Pagoda Resort\, 112 Melville Parade\, Como\n\n\nCost \n  \n  \n \nEarly bird before 31/3/22 \nMember $1050.00 \nRural/remote member $850.00 \nNon-members $2075.00 \nStudent $550.00 \nStandard rate after 31/3/22 \nMember $1350.00 \nRural/remote member $1000.00 \nNon-members $2075.00 \nStudent $650.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments\nWelcome Tea/Coffee\, Morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.\n\n\n\nBook Online\nIf you prefer booking offline\, you can use the registration form below. \n**PD Registration Form 2021 \nPay via invoice options are available using the ‘Book Online’ function below.
