SENSE – Assessment and Treatment

May 8, 2021 @ 8:00 am - May 9, 2021 @ 4:00 pm

Sensory Rehabilitation following Stroke: Neuroscience Foundations,

New Evidence and Application to Clinical Practice.

Presented by Professor Leeanne Carey –  BAppSc (OT), PhD, FAOTA, FOTARA.

Leeanne Carey is Professor of Occupational Therapy in the School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, La Trobe University and Founding Head of the Neurorehabilitation and Recovery research group, Stroke Division, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in Melbourne, Australia. Professor Carey’s research program focuses on stroke rehabilitation and recovery: in particular how the brain adapts and how we might harness that potential in rehabilitation. She has developed a successful, neuroscience-based approach to help stroke survivors regain a sense of touch so that they can use their hands more effectively in daily activities. She uses tools such as MRI to investigate changes in the brain and how this knowledge may be used to better understand recovery and target rehabilitation. Research includes the impact of depression and cognition on stroke recovery. An important focus has been to translate these discoveries into clinical practice and better outcomes for stroke survivors

The aim of the workshop is to guide you in acquiring the knowledge, skills and clinical reasoning required to deliver evidence-based sensory rehabilitation to persons who have impaired body sensations after a stroke.

A particular focus will be to introduce you to new evidence-based assessments and SENSe Therapy.

 Overall Learning Objectives:

Following this workshop you should be able to:

describe the nature of sensory loss following stroke

appreciate the impact of sensory loss following stroke

critically evaluate current sensory assessment methods and be aware of new standardized assessments

-critically evaluate methods of treating sensory loss relative to current principles of neuroscience.

explain the rationale and neuroscience foundations for SENSe Therapy

-articulate the principles underlying SENSe Therapy

-apply newly researched sensory retraining methods to a range of sensory stimuli and tasks.

-apply evidence-based principles of sensory retraining in the context of functional, client-centred activities.

-plan a SENSe Therapy treatment program for a client

-adopt an evidence-based approach to assessment and rehabilitation of sensory loss following stroke

The workshop will include practical sessions relating to:

Assessment using new standardised assessments,

Assessment of sensation, in context of occupational tasks

Application of SENSe training approach – component training

-texture discrimination

-limb position sense.

-tactile object recognition.

Application of principles of training in context of everyday tasks.

Materials provided

Workshop manual that includes presentation slides, practical workshop sheets, case scenarios and training resources.

Target audience

Occupational therapists and physiotherapists – with particular interest in stroke rehabilitation.
