We are delighted to present this innovative workshop on “Difficult conversations and practical supervision for staff involving debriefing” by Dr Margaret Potter.

Dr Margaret Potter is an education consultant, health professional and internationally certified coach with more than 20 years of experience working with individuals, groups and organisations to optimise communication, teamwork and workplace-based performance. Margaret is a sought after presenter who will engage, inform and entertain participants with a “hands on” approach.

Background

Having a difficult conversation, be it with a patient/client, student or colleague is challenging for any health professional. When is a good time? How should you approach the situation? If the conversation triggers a bad response what should you do?

The desire to maintain a cordial and respectful relationship, while still seeking to address matters of concern requires assertion, diplomacy and mediation skills. If an individual is not confident in their ability to have a difficult conversation, he/she may avoid it or be ineffectual in their attempts, which can ultimately result in an escalation of the problem.

This workshop will focus on assisting you to improve your communication and professional supervision skills, particularly in potential conflict situations.

Intended outcomes: In this workshop we will:

  • Explore the power dynamic in relationships
  • Discuss the key elements of effective feedback
  • Examine a coach approach to debriefing
  • Apply the skills learnt in role play situations
  • Increase your confidence to manage difficult conversations
