Connecting Community for Kids

Our project is looking at providing more opportunities for families where a member has a disability to engage in community. One of the ways we are doing this is through hosting Village Morning Teas. Through our investigations we have found that parents where their child has a disability is often too occupied supporting their child’s needs to enjoy chatting to parents in spaces like playgroups to access that peer support. Our Rockingham family mentor, Emma, is starting a weekly morning tea to hopefully provide as safe space for parents to engage. She is seeking support from student occupational therapists to run activities (they can design these themselves or we can support) to support social engagement of the children while the parents are having some respite. The parents will remain in the same venue so duty of care remains with them.

We are starting term 4, it is only a short term project, so we would love to engage some students ASAP. In terms of payment we are seeking further funding but in the initial stages it would most likely be a volunteer capacity or token payment. The goal of the project is to make it sustainable though so there is an opportunity for the student to network, develop their portfolio for future employment, and hopefully continue in their work through future funding.
