OT Experiences of Working with Hypoxic-Ischaemic Brain Injury Clients
June 26, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
The Neuroscience Interest Group next meeting is:
Looking at OT experiences of working with hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury clients, including their role, enablers and barriers for practice.
Wednesday 26th June 2019
5.30-6.30pm. (Free parking – large car park located next door)
Presenter: Sara Van Reeken – Neuro Research Project presented – needs OT’s input – focus group
About Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury
Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury (HIBI) is damage caused to the brain by a reduction of oxygen thereby causing problems with cognition and function The most common cause of HIBI is cardiac arrest, which has increasing prevalence as those surviving from cardiac arrest is increasing. Currently, the literature on cognitive function post-cardiac arrest is limited, especially for those with mild to moderate symptoms and the role of occupational therapy assessment and intervention needs further research.
Study Aims and Methods
The aim of this study is to explore the role of occupational therapy in an acute hospital setting for people with suspected mild to moderate cognitive and functional impairments after HIBI.
The current literature will be reviewed surrounding the clinical profile and therapy assessment and intervention for this population. The occupational therapy practices, perspectives as well as enablers and barriers when working with HIBI patients will then be explored This will be completed through a survey and then collect more detailed responses in a focus group. Using the information gathered, recommendations for clinical practice will be constructed
Significance of Project
The result of this project will provide occupational therapists with comprehensive recommendations which are evidenced-based and informed by current practice. This will strengthen and develop the occupational therapy role in the neuroscience acute setting and improve services for those with HIBI.
It is essential that we hear the perspectives from as many occupational therapists in acute settings as possible By participating in this survey and/or focus group, you are strengthening the occupational therapy evidence base and improving services for patients. For your participation in the project, you will be supplied with the recommendation for practice that are constructed, as well as focus group and survey results.
The NSIG is an affiliated interest group of the WA OT Association. Our costs in 2019, are as follows: Presenter / Members of WA OT Association = Free, Non-members $10 per session.
We hope to see you there at our next meeting, best wishes from Therese Trouchet (Convener) and Jasmina Maric (Treasurer)
We are still keen to hear from anyone who may be able to present on a topic, that you feel might be of interest to the group – if you feel you would like to contribute or have any ideas on topics -please contact me.
We are actively seeking OT’s who can assist the NSIG in any capacity.
Therese has had 2 surgeries, medically unwell for many months (unable to talk /eat post jaw fractured in 4 places) and has been unable to assist NSIG. Sending my apologies for not being in a position to do any volunteer work for OT NSIG. Would really appreciate if others can assist.
