The areas covered in this workshop are :- Theoretical Models, Assessment, Hand Development,Pre-writing and drawing skills,Intervention Strategies andSpecific Programs.

This 2-day workshop investigates elements of handwriting, drawing and tool usage for kindergarten and primary school children. Handwriting difficulties are one of the primary reasons for a referral to an occupational therapist. Handwriting is also one of the most complex tasks in which children engage. It requires skills in the areas of cognition, visuo-spatial, language fine motor and kinaesthetic development. Research has indicated that children who can write well perform at a higher level academically. There has also been correlation in the literature with regard to proficient handwriting and children’s performance in the areas of increased concentration, improved self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as the ability for children to express themselves creatively.

The workshop aims to be practical in nature, providing participants with:

  • An overview of normal development of pencil skills/drawing/handwriting
  • An overview of classroom handwriting expectations
  • Development of pencil/graphomotor skills
  • An understanding or overview of various tools and classroom/clinical observations that may assist in identification of the various areas of difficulty, including:
  • Classroom set-up
  • Handwriting posture
  • Development of pencil/graphomotor skills
  • Writing tool use
  • Writing speed and legibility and
  • Written content
  • A clinical reasoning framework to determine the direction for intervention for these children.
  • The workshop will also provide participants with opportunities to develop numerous strategies to assist emergent writers and those in later years with continuing handwriting difficulties.
